On Sunday, Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang declared that artificial general intelligence has arrived with OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, but prominent AI critic Gary Marcus quickly pushed back.

Jensen Huang Declares AGI Has Arrived

Huang took to X and congratulated OpenAI on Astra.

"From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years," Huang wrote. "AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team."

He also highlighted that Astra was trained using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems. He added that another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs are coming online.

OpenAI has described Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model. The company said Astra scored 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and 100% on ExploitBench.

Gary Marcus Pushes Back

Marcus, an NYU professor and longtime AI skeptic, was far less convinced.

"Sad to see Jensen claim that AGI has arrived, with no evidence and no definitions," Marcus wrote.

He argued that Astra still falls short under conventional definitions of AGI and warned that declaring victory without first agreeing on what AGI means "simply muddies the waters."

OpenAI President Greg Brockman shared Huang’s post and said the company is "now moving into the AGI era."

Huang Has Been Calling AGI Here Since 2025

In March 2025, Huang said he believed AGI had already arrived during an appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast. "I think we’ve achieved AGI."

According to Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, AGI refers to AI that can learn, reason and apply knowledge across a broad range of tasks at a human level or beyond.

Unlike narrow AI, AGI could adapt to unfamiliar situations. However, the concept remains debated because there is no universally accepted definition or test for AGI and ongoing safety and ethical concerns persist.

During the podcast, Huang said his definition does not depend on whether the AI business remains successful.

In his view, an AI that creates a viral app, generates $1 billion in revenue and eventually shuts down could still qualify as AGI — similar to short-lived dot-com companies that nonetheless demonstrated real commercial success.

At the 2023 New York Times DealBook Summit, Huang had said AGI could become a reality within five years. At the time, he defined AGI as a computer or software system capable of performing tasks that require human-level intelligence.
