Taiwan's Lai Visits Eswatini in Covert Trip Costing NT$25 Billion, Mainland Responds

The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council held a regular press conference on June 3. Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian addressed recent cross-strait hot topics in response to journalists' questions.

A reporter noted that multiple Taiwanese media outlets have reported that Lai Ching-te made a covert visit to Eswatini in early May, with the cost of the trip reportedly reaching as high as NT$25 billion. The investment plan signed by both sides indicates that Taiwan will invest NT$25 billion to construct a fuel storage facility in Eswatini, with all profits from the completed project going to the Eswatini royal family. The reporter asked for comment on this matter.

Zhu Fenglian stated that the Lai Ching-te authorities, in pursuit of their political self-interest aimed at "independence," disregard the well-being and livelihoods of people in Taiwan and recklessly squander public funds. She characterized their actions as typical "checkbook diplomacy" and the behavior of "unscrupulous politicians."
