Digital health company Hinge Health, Inc. (NYSE: HNGE) announced on Thursday that a new study published in the Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research demonstrates its fall prevention program significantly reduces the risk of falls and emergency department visits for individuals aged 65 and older.

The non-randomized controlled trial tracked 687 adults aged 65 and above who were at risk of falling over a three-month period. The intervention group received digital exercise therapy through the Hinge Health platform, which included dual-task training to improve balance, health education, and support from a multidisciplinary care team including physical therapists and health coaches. The control group only received educational reading materials about improving balance and preventing falls.

Study results showed that compared to the control group, participants using Hinge Health reported 37% fewer falls and had a 57% lower chance of reporting an emergency department visit. Additionally, participants in the intervention group scored 6.9 points higher on physical function and control measures, as assessed by the SF-36 physical function scale.

Dr. Jeffrey Krauss, Chief Medical Officer of Hinge Health, stated: "Falls are potentially life-changing events for older adults, often leading to serious injuries, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life. This research confirms the power of preventive care. By helping seniors build strength and balance, we are not only reducing emergency department visits but also helping people stay active, confident, and in control of their lives."

For older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury, with nearly one in four seniors experiencing a fall each year, resulting in over 3 million emergency department visits and approximately $80 billion in healthcare costs, two-thirds of which are covered by Medicare. For Medicare Advantage plans, falls also impact quality scores, costs, and member experience. These findings demonstrate a scalable approach to reducing fall risk, supporting functional independence, and expanding access to care, particularly for individuals facing barriers such as transportation or mobility issues that make it difficult to access in-person care.
