UnitedHealth's stock surged 8.77% during intraday trading on Thursday, following the release of its second-quarter 2026 financial results that significantly exceeded analyst expectations.
The healthcare giant reported adjusted earnings per share of $6.38, beating the consensus estimate of $4.90, while revenue of $112.03 billion surpassed expectations of approximately $110.85 billion. The company also raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance to a range of $19.50 to $20.00, up from its previous forecast and above analyst estimates.
The strong performance was attributed to effective medical cost controls, with the medical cost ratio improving to 86.7% compared to the expected 88.47%, and improved operations in its Optum health services segment. These results signal sustained progress in the company's turnaround efforts under CEO Stephen Hemsley, who has refocused the organization and invested in artificial intelligence initiatives to drive efficiency.
