The US Department of Justice has announced a significant substantive relief ruling in its antitrust lawsuit against Google's online advertising technology market, known as United States et al. v. Google LLC.

The federal district court for the Eastern District of Virginia affirmed in its decision that Google's monopoly must be brought to an end, that the market constraints resulting from its anticompetitive conduct must be removed, and that the company should not be permitted to retain the monopoly power and profits it unlawfully acquired.

The court explicitly rejected Google's argument that ending a monopoly is not an appropriate objective in a monopolization case.
