IBM (NYSE: IBM) has announced a significant upgrade to its Bob software development platform, introducing multi-agent collaboration capabilities, an AI cost analysis tool, and pre-built workflows for enterprise system modernization.
The core updates include a multi-agent architecture where Bob can match tasks with different AI models and coordinate multiple agents for execution. The newly launched Bobalytics feature enables real-time monitoring of AI resource consumption and allocation, helping enterprises achieve visibility into AI costs and usage. The platform also supports parallel tool calling and allows sub-agents to independently handle complex tasks, which aids in controlling context window expansion and operational costs.
IBM has also introduced three advanced packages tailored for specific enterprise environments: the IBM Z package, the IBM i package, and the Java modernization package. The IBM Z package targets the modernization of COBOL and PL/I systems and JCL analysis for mainframe environments. The IBM i package offers remote file system integration and workflows specific to IBM i environments. The Java modernization package supports migration to Java 25, large-scale code refactoring, and dependency analysis.
Neel Sundaresan, General Manager of Automation and AI at IBM, stated that enterprises now require not just better coding assistants, but end-to-end intelligent development partners that can operate within the systems their teams already use, while also providing the necessary governance, security, and cost control. IBM cited a survey indicating that 85% of DevSecOps professionals believe AI has shifted development bottlenecks from code writing to code review and verification.
Real-world cases demonstrate Bob's potential. Cloud solutions company Blue Pearl used Bob to complete a legacy system modernization project, which was initially estimated to require 14 engineers working for nine months, in just three days. Internally, IBM already has over 80,000 employees using Bob, with an average productivity improvement of 45% reported.
