The delivery uniform co-created with Jack Ma's input has captured an international design honor, elevating a standard work garment to a global stage. The orange-and-black outfit, which Ma was photographed wearing, has won the Gold Award at the French Design Awards, marking a first for the prestigious competition.

The online photos of Ma, sporting a black cap and the sleek racing-inspired uniform, quickly went viral. The look was a stark departure from his typical executive image, and observant netizens noted the inner layer was the same jacket he wore during a late-night cycling outing in Hangzhou last year. What was initially seen as a casual ride was later revealed to be part of the design process for the uniform, proving that every public appearance by the business magnate carries significance.

Where the design journey began

The uniform, known as the Taobao Flash Purchase City Rider outfit, was developed with Ma as the core driver and a deeply involved participant. According to lead designer Yang Tao, Ma's concern and respect for delivery workers sparked the initial idea. Ma reportedly checked on the design progress every evening, acting as both supervisor and designer, and even personally tested the fabrics and wore the prototypes.

The design team behind the award-winning uniform was not composed of professional fashion experts but rather a group of enthusiasts from various industries including food and beverage and nightlife. Their inspiration, influenced strongly by Ma's input, focused on humanistic values. The jury president of the French Design Awards, Dario Olivero, praised the uniform for giving riders a recognizable professional identity and allowing the public to see them as clear and respectable urban service providers, highlighting the power of design, art, and humanistic spirit.

The uniform features an orange and black color scheme with a racing suit-inspired silhouette that is both stylish and functional. The fabric is a high-end three-layer composite material that is windproof, breathable, and water-repellent, suitable for long-duration outdoor work. Safety was a primary concern, with wide reflective strips for nighttime visibility and transparent pockets on the sleeves for storing vital medical information like blood type and emergency contacts. The accompanying waist bag includes first-aid supplies such as antiseptic wipes and bandages.

Importantly, the design process incorporated feedback from frontline riders. After initial testers suggested the reflective strips were too thin for adequate nighttime visibility, the team immediately upgraded them to thicker versions. This responsiveness underscores the design's practical, rider-focused approach, and its achievement represents a significant milestone as the first time the award has been given to a professional uniform for frontline workers.

Taobao Flash Purchase accelerates its expansion

The investment in the rider uniform reflects the strategic priorities of Taobao Flash Purchase. The uniform is not just a piece of workwear but a visible symbol of the delivery fulfillment system, indicating the platform's commitment to placing immediate delivery capabilities at its core. The service, formerly known as Taobao's "Hourly Delivery," was rebranded and launched widely in late April and May 2025, integrating with the Ele.me merchant network and leveraging traffic from the main Taobao app.

The service has experienced rapid growth, with daily order volume peaking at 120 million and monthly transacting buyers reaching 300 million as of August 2025. In December 2025, the Ele.me app was unified under the Taobao Flash Purchase brand, further solidifying consumer recognition. For 2026, Alibaba has set a clear strategic direction for Flash Purchase: the primary goal is market share growth, with firm commitment to investment to achieve market leadership. The focus is now shifting from pure scale expansion to improving order quality and delivery efficiency.

Alibaba's Q2 earnings report showed that the Chinese instant retail business generated revenue of 53.295 billion yuan, a 45% year-on-year increase. This growth is driven by the ability to deliver nearby inventory quickly, requiring a robust local fulfillment network. Traditional e-commerce ships goods from remote warehouses, but instant retail requires products to be pre-positioned in local stores or front warehouses to achieve half-hour delivery. This involves platform inventory matching, merchant picking, and rider delivery, all connecting through a sophisticated local operations system.

The high-frequency use cases like food delivery and grocery shopping encourage users to open the Taobao app more often, exposing them to a wider range of products. Brand offline stores can extend their service radius by fulfilling nearby online orders from their existing inventory, while businesses like Hema and Tmall Supermarket provide differentiated fresh food and daily necessities. However, challenges remain in synchronizing online and offline inventory, managing stocking pressure, and controlling delivery costs when orders are scattered. Success will depend on integrating the entire supply chain, merchant operations, and delivery network to create a stable, sustainable customer experience.

Intensifying competition in the instant retail sector

According to iResearch forecasts, the domestic food delivery market in Q2 2026 is expected to be more balanced, with Meituan holding 43%, Taobao Flash Purchase at 42%, and JD.com's delivery service at 15%. Each platform has distinct advantages. Taobao Flash Purchase leverages Taobao's massive user base and brand merchant resources, combined with the ecosystem of Hema and Tmall Supermarket, aiming to turn extensive online product offerings into nearby, quickly purchasable inventory.

Meituan's strength lies in its long-established local merchant network, user habits, and mature delivery infrastructure, including a warehouse network of over 50,000 flash warehouses. JD.com relies on its mature retail procurement, brand partnerships, and logistics system, noting improved operational efficiency in its delivery business. As the competition becomes more refined, the key success factors are warehouse network layout, product stocking, and procurement replenishment efficiency. A dense warehouse network expands coverage but increases costs, requiring high order density and quick inventory turnover for profitability.

The era of simple price subsidies is waning, replaced by a focus on robust warehousing, reliable supply chains, and superior logistics as core competitive barriers. While promotions may attract initial orders, repeat business ultimately depends on consistent product availability, rapid delivery, and fair pricing. Platforms must continuously optimize their ecosystems to ensure smooth, efficient operations for riders, stores, and warehouses, positioning themselves for long-term success in a market where convenience and reliability are paramount.
