Trump's Younger Son Defends SpaceX, Rejects Overpromise Claims

Eric Trump, the second son of U.S. President Donald Trump, pushed back on Thursday against criticism of SpaceX's Starlink service. He argued that the company's broader achievements in space exploration far outweigh the concerns raised in a particular opinion column. Eric Trump, co-founder of World Liberty Financial and son of President Donald Trump, criticized a column that accused SpaceX of overpromising and underdelivering on the direct-to-cellphone capabilities of Starlink satellites. In a post on X, he responded that such criticism ignores SpaceX's remarkable accomplishments in the industry. Targeting the "overpromise, underdeliver" claim, he wrote: "In 2025, approximately 80% to 85% of all payload mass launched into orbit globally was carried by SpaceX." He also noted that the Falcon rocket has achieved 165 successful launches with zero failures, and that the company's reusable boosters have each flown over 30 times. Eric Trump stated: "A private company has surpassed every other country in the world." SpaceX CEO Elon Musk quickly supported Trump's view, responding to the post. Earlier this week, SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.81 billion, a 92% year-over-year increase, exceeding Wall Street's expectation of $6.93 billion. As of the end of the second quarter, the company held $100 billion in cash and cash equivalents, with a backlog of $47.5 billion in pending orders. Demand remains strong across all three of its core business segments, particularly in cloud services.
