UK Inflation Rate Drops to Lowest Level in Over a Year, Offering Brief Respite for Consumers

Inflation in the United Kingdom has fallen to its lowest point in over a year, driven by declines in petrol and food prices, offering a brief period of relief for consumers. However, this easing trend may prove short-lived as renewed tensions in the Middle East push energy costs higher.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday showed the Consumer Prices Index rose by 2.6% in June compared to a year earlier, down from 2.8% in May. This marks the lowest rate since March of last year and came in below the average economist forecast of 2.7%, representing the third consecutive month inflation has undershot expectations.

Last month, crude oil prices fell sharply as market expectations grew that conflict between the US and Iran might be nearing an end, leading to a 3.1% drop in petrol and diesel costs. Additionally, food inflation fell to its lowest level so far in 2024, and significant discounting in the clothing sector also exerted downward pressure on the overall inflation rate.

The rate of services inflation, a key domestic pressure gauge closely watched by the Bank of England, eased from 3.7% to 3.6%, though this was slightly higher than anticipated.

Nevertheless, the respite for consumers from lower inflation may only be temporary. Yael Selfin, Chief Economist at KPMG UK, noted that June "likely marks the low point for inflation this year, with higher energy bills set to complicate the near-term outlook."

Markets widely expect the Bank of England to hold interest rates steady at its meeting next week as it balances risks from rising energy prices against a softening labour market and sluggish economic growth. The central bank will also release a full set of new economic forecasts alongside its rate decision on July 30th. Markets are currently pricing in one rate hike from the Bank this year, with around a 60% probability of a second increase.
