The aviation sector is currently experiencing a peak in return travel, driven largely by students heading back to school. However, ticket prices have not seen a corresponding rise, with some routes instead offering heavily discounted fares.
A check of online travel platforms on August 31st revealed that the lowest price for a same-day booking on the Beijing-Shenzhen route was around 500 yuan. Similarly, flights from Beijing to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Hangzhou were all priced at approximately 300 yuan, according to industry observers.
Tourism market researchers note that the return-travel surge has failed to push prices upward. Airlines have deployed substantial capacity for the summer season, and there has been no significant reduction in flights. The demand side is primarily driven by students traveling point-to-point, and with university start dates spread across different times, the overall market supply-demand balance remains relaxed, making this an opportune moment for off-peak travel.
Industry insiders suggest that September airfares could represent the lowest point for the coming months. Over the next two weeks, travelers departing from Beijing can find numerous special fares priced at 200 yuan to destinations such as Zhengzhou, Changsha, Xiamen, Qingdao, and Kunming, with a large number of 90% discount tickets appearing on booking platforms. Alternatively, departing from Shanghai, Chengdu, or Guangzhou, similarly priced 200 yuan tickets to cities across the country are also readily available.
Transportation industry analysts predict that airfares will continue to decline over the next one to two weeks, with absolute passenger traffic volumes also expected to drop significantly after the peak season. September is traditionally a slow month, and with ample capacity available, overall ticket prices are likely to remain at low levels until just before the National Day holiday.
Observations also show that consumers are already booking flights for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays in advance. Data from online travel platforms indicates that the number of travelers securing holiday flights a full month ahead has surged 21% compared to the same period last year, with overall travel enthusiasm exceeding previous years.
