Meta Testing Standalone Vibes App to Compete Directly with Sora

Meta confirmed on Thursday that it is testing a standalone application for Vibes. The feature was launched last September, allowing users to create and share AI-generated short videos through Vibes, as well as browse others' AI-generated videos in a dedicated feed.

The product is similar to TikTok or Instagram Stories, with the key difference being that all videos on the platform are generated by artificial intelligence. Previously, the feed feature was only embedded within the Meta AI app. By separating it into a standalone app, Meta aims to position it as a direct competitor to OpenAI's AI-generated video social application Sora, which launched shortly after Vibes was introduced.

In an emailed statement, Meta said: "Vibes received positive user feedback early on after its launch within the Meta AI app, and we are now building on that momentum by testing a standalone application. We are seeing more users enjoy creating, discovering, and sharing AI-generated videos with friends in this format. This standalone app will provide a dedicated platform for such experiences, offering a more focused and immersive environment for users. We plan to expand the app's functionality further based on community feedback."
