Iran Conflict Keeps European Gas Prices Pinned Near Three-Year Peaks

European natural gas prices are hovering near their highest levels in over three years, as traders weigh the region's supply outlook against the escalating risk of a broader Middle East conflict. Benchmark futures are fluctuating around €78 per megawatt-hour, following a cumulative 10% advance over the previous four trading sessions. With Iran stating it is prepared for a more intense war, the ongoing hostilities have already disrupted roughly one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas shipping routes.

US President Donald Trump has suggested the conflict might draw to a close after the November midterm elections. The fresh outbreak of fighting in the Middle East, combined with a rise in attacks on energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine, has amplified market concerns over supply security. While European gas prices remain far from the record peaks seen during the 2022 energy crisis, they have more than doubled compared to pre-conflict levels, adding further strain to the region's economy as winter approaches.

A slight sign of de-escalation has emerged from Ukraine, where officials announced strikes on two condensate processing facilities in Russia's Arctic region. This development suggests that the Yamal LNG plant, another key gas source for Europe, has not been affected by the attacks. Europe is currently striving to replenish its depleted gas inventories ahead of the winter season, with storage facilities at roughly 67% capacity — the lowest level for this time of year on record.

With global LNG supply tightening, Europe will likely be forced to compete more aggressively for spot cargoes. As winter heating demand increases, prices could climb even higher in the coming months.
