Stock Track | American Airlines Plummets 5.02% Intraday as Rising Oil Prices on Strait of Hormuz Worries Hit Airline Stocks

Shares of American Airlines (AAL) tumbled 5.02% during intraday trading on Monday, as a sharp rise in crude oil prices sparked by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz pressured the entire airline sector.

The sell-off was triggered by a nearly 3% surge in oil prices after Iran insisted that the United States satisfy several demands before reopening the key shipping route. Brent crude futures climbed above $86 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude advanced to over $80 per barrel. As fuel represents one of the largest operating costs for carriers, the spike in oil directly threatens airline profitability and spooked investors.

American Airlines was not alone in the decline; peers including JetBlue, Delta, United, and Southwest also fell between 1.5% and over 5% in the session, reflecting broad-based sector weakness tied to the renewed geopolitical uncertainty.
