U.S. Nuclear Startup Deep Fission Launches Pioneering Energy Project in Kansas

The U.S. nuclear energy startup Deep Fission has commenced construction on a groundbreaking energy project at the Parsons Great Plains Industrial Park in Kansas. This innovative company aims to transform traditional nuclear power production by burying reactors deep underground, a method it claims could reduce operational costs by up to 80%.

Deep Fission is piloting a novel "gravity reactor" design, which involves placing a 15-megawatt pressurized water reactor at the bottom of a borehole one mile deep. By situating the reactor approximately 6,000 feet below the surface, the company asserts that gravity can perform the work of expensive mechanical systems, thereby cutting costs significantly.

Developing more economical methods for building, maintaining, and operating nuclear power plants has become a growing priority for both public and private sectors. Nuclear energy, once heavily criticized, is regaining global favor as nations confront tightening climate deadlines and escalating energy security concerns. The global energy trilemma—the challenge of delivering affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy simultaneously—has intensified, positioning nuclear power as a key component of energy strategies worldwide.

However, traditional nuclear fission remains a capital-intensive endeavor, with new reactors facing steep upfront costs and lengthy regulatory approvals. Next-generation nuclear technologies promise faster and more cost-effective deployment. Deep Fission states that its modular design, combined with the protective barrier offered by surrounding bedrock, will lead to substantial savings and enhanced safety.

Deep Fission is among several startups racing to advance next-generation nuclear fission. A major focus within nuclear innovation is the development of small modular reactors, which are expected to make nuclear power more scalable and streamlined, reducing both initial development expenses and approval timelines.
