The chief artificial intelligence security official appointed during the Trump administration, Chris Fall, has left his post after just three months, according to a spokesperson from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Fall previously served as the Director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), where he led the U.S. government's voluntary review mechanism for mainstream artificial intelligence models. The CAISI is an office within the Department of Commerce that serves as a key industry liaison, responsible for advancing commercial AI testing and related research initiatives.

His departure comes as the White House and members of Congress across the nation are engaged in a debate over how to regulate this emerging technology.

The spokesperson stated, "Following Chris's departure, Dr. Arvind Raman, the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will assume oversight of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation and will serve as its acting director."

Raman will also lead the search for a new permanent director for the center, with an appointment expected to be announced in the coming weeks. An unnamed representative from the Department of Commerce indicated that Secretary Howard Lutnick is seeking a candidate with substantial knowledge and professional expertise in the field of artificial intelligence.

It was reported that after the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed export controls on Anthropic in June, Fall was deeply involved in negotiations with the company's executives, discussing how to restore external access to its advanced models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
