The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has recently approved Zhejiang SpaceIoT Technology Co., Ltd. (SpaceIoT) to launch a commercial trial for its satellite IoT services, a move that marks a significant step in expanding private sector involvement in China's satellite communication industry.

According to the official MIIT website, this approval aligns with the ministry's broader strategy to optimize market access and foster the growth of satellite communication services. The trial, which will last for two years, permits SpaceIoT to operate satellite IoT services on a pilot basis. The company will leverage its "Geely Future Mobility Constellation (Phase I)" to deliver wide-coverage, low-power, and highly reliable IoT connectivity solutions.

These services are designed to enable all-weather, intelligent data collection and remote interaction across key sectors such as smart transportation, marine fisheries, and energy and water resources. As China's satellite communication sector accelerates its commercial trajectory, satellite IoT is poised to become a vital complement to broadband satellite internet infrastructure.

Launching this commercial trial is expected to help satellite IoT achieve economies of scale, fostering a structured, collaborative, and mutually beneficial industry ecosystem. The approval also signals a continued commitment to opening the sector to private enterprises, which is seen as a crucial driver for invigorating the private economy, bolstering the commercial space sector, and cultivating new quality productive forces to support a modern industrial system.

Looking ahead, the MIIT has stated it will further implement central government directives, balance development with security, refine market access rules for satellite communications, and strengthen oversight and security protocols across the entire industry chain. These efforts aim to propel high-quality development in the sector, ultimately contributing to the nation's ambitions of becoming a manufacturing, cyber, space, and digital powerhouse.
