On November 3, coinciding with JD.com's 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, Kaibo Supermarket in Hong Kong participated in this annual shopping extravaganza for the first time since joining JD.com. Leveraging its end-to-end super supply chain, JD.com has successfully delivered the first batch of 5,000 jin (approximately 2,500 kg) of hairy crabs, sourced directly from production areas, to Kaibo Supermarkets across Hong Kong.
This shipment marks the largest volume of mainland hairy crabs directly supplied to Hong Kong since the resumption of direct exports, achieving a record-breaking "12-hour journey from crab farms to store shelves." After a nine-year hiatus, mainland hairy crabs are once again being supplied directly to Hong Kong, thanks to JD.com's supply chain expertise and its partnership with the first batch of qualified seafood suppliers authorized for Hong Kong exports. This collaboration has established a seamless channel from crab farms in Jiangsu to supermarkets in Hong Kong.
JD.com has implemented a comprehensive quality control system covering breeding and harvesting. During cultivation, JD.com's professional quality inspection team conducts over five rounds of sampling tests on water quality, feed, and mature crabs to ensure quality from the source. Once the export volume is confirmed, customs officials supervise the harvesting process on-site, selecting only premium crabs that meet weight standards and have rich roe. Random samples are then sent for further testing. After passing customs inspections, the crabs are packed under supervision and flown directly to Hong Kong via chartered flights. Each crab is equipped with a traceable tag, allowing consumers to scan and access key details such as the breeding base and quality inspection reports.
To maintain freshness, JD.com employs a "full cold-chain + direct air transport" solution, ensuring the crabs reach Kaibo stores in as little as 12 hours while maintaining a constant temperature throughout the journey. This guarantees the crabs remain lively and fresh upon arrival.
Price-wise, JD.com's direct sourcing and efficient logistics reduce intermediate costs, enabling Kaibo Supermarket to offer hairy crabs at prices approximately 20% lower than traditional Hong Kong retail channels.
