Can Bitcoin Hold the $86K Line Against Rate Hikes and Legislative Setbacks?

Bitcoin has demonstrated notable resilience despite facing twin headwinds from an interest rate increase and a failed regulatory bill, according to leading industry voices who believe the toughest phase for investors has now passed. Tom Lee, Chief Investment Officer at Fundstrat Capital, and Kevin Malone, CEO of iTrustCapital, have both characterized the current market stage with optimism, setting a constructive tone for what comes next.

In an interview with Paul Barron, iTrustCapital CEO Kevin Malone declared that the prolonged downtrend commonly referred to as "crypto winter" has officially ended. His platform, which specializes in cryptocurrency and stock investments for retirement accounts, holds approximately $350 million in idle client funds, with a "considerable portion" already redeployed back into the market. Malone emphasized that Bitcoin does not depend on "clear legislation" and identified a critical price support level, noting that if Bitcoin maintains a weekly closing price above $85,000, the asset's trajectory would remain quite favorable.

This signal of capital returning to the market aligns with technical support on price charts, creating a constructive convergence. On the macroeconomic front, Fundstrat's Tom Lee characterizes the recent rate hike as merely the "peak of rising interest rates." He projects that the PCE inflation reading due on September 30 will ease from 3.4% to near 3%, and asserts that even another 0.25 percentage point increase would not derail the economy.

A wave of policy-related negative developments has unfolded recently. On September 15, the "clear bill" failed a procedural vote in the Senate by a margin of 50 to 49, falling short of the required 60-vote threshold. The following day, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75% to 4%, marking the first rate increase of 2023.

Market signals have been mixed amid the volatility. Following the vote, Bitcoin briefly dipped below $76,000, but it subsequently recovered its upward momentum, closing Tuesday at $86,423. However, 16 of 18 Fed officials project at least one more rate hike this year, and on September 15, $450 million was pulled from Bitcoin ETFs—even though the cryptocurrency still managed to gain 0.6% that day. The next pivotal test arrives on September 30, when revised inflation figures will ultimately determine whether the $86,423 to $76,000 range resolves to the upside or the downside.
