On March 31, global software giant Oracle announced a major workforce reduction, with thousands of employees informed that day would be their last. According to US media reports, Oracle may cut as many as 30,000 positions and sell certain assets to fund its artificial intelligence infrastructure development. On April 1, the family member of a Chinese employee at Oracle told a reporter that her husband's position had been eliminated. "Since the first round of layoffs in September 2025, he has been constantly on edge. Now, with this news, there's no need to live in fear anymore," she said. She admitted that while being laid off is regrettable, they already have their own plans. "It's not a big problem, and there are no obstacles we can't overcome," she added. Reporters noted that multiple Oracle employees posted on LinkedIn stating they had received no prior notice from their managers or human resources. On the morning of March 31, they received an email signed by "Oracle Leadership," after which their system access was revoked. Specific details regarding severance packages are to be announced separately. Oracle has long been renowned for its database software. In recent years, it has focused on artificial intelligence and expanded its cloud computing division in an effort to become a strong competitor against industry leaders like Amazon and Microsoft. On the day the layoff news was announced, Oracle's stock price surged by 6%. Media analysis suggested the layoffs might be viewed by the market as a positive signal of AI-driven efficiency gains. These workforce reductions could also be part of a cost-control strategy to offset pressures from the company's significant investments in AI elsewhere. In the context of massive AI investments by US tech giants, Oracle's layoffs are not an isolated case. Days earlier, Meta was reported to have laid off hundreds of employees from departments including social media and recruiting. Amazon has cut approximately 30,000 jobs over the past six months, and fintech company Block announced in February that it would reduce its workforce by nearly half.
