Western Digital shares tumbled 5.54% in pre-market trading on Tuesday, extending a broad selloff across the memory and storage sector as a confluence of negative catalysts battered investor sentiment.

The decline was fueled by intensifying competition from China, where memory chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) made a blockbuster trading debut that saw its shares surge 466% and reach a market capitalization of $484 billion. That development raised fears of heightened competitive pressure on established NAND flash players. Adding to the headwinds, reports emerged that a state-backed Chinese company has begun mass-producing immersion deep ultraviolet lithography machines, a critical technology for chip manufacturing that signals China's accelerating push toward semiconductor self-sufficiency and threatens the competitive moat of Western equipment suppliers.

Compounding the sector-wide rout, Morgan Stanley warned that memory contract prices may peak in the fourth quarter, suggesting the AI-driven storage boom is approaching an inflection point. Meanwhile, bearish rumors circulated that SanDisk had signed a low-price long-term supply agreement with Meta, cloud vendors were pressuring QLC enterprise SSD pricing downward, and procurement demand from Chinese cloud service providers was weakening. These developments reinforced fears of NAND flash pricing normalization and a potential supply glut, triggering broad-based profit-taking across storage names.
