MUFG Forecasts Fed's Next Move as Rate Cut in 2027

Derek Halpenny from Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group suggests that the U.S. Federal Reserve's next policy action will be to lower interest rates in 2027. During an interview on Monday, he noted that oil prices are expected to decline as the Trump administration pushes for a deal with Iran, which would provide Fed Chair Kevin Warsh with greater leeway to avoid raising rates.

Halpenny stated, "I believe the U.S. government is growing concerned about American interest rates and this gradual upward trend." He added that worries over rising U.S. Treasury yields may also be a factor behind coordinated moves by the U.S. and Japan to strengthen the yen. Currently, money markets are pricing in a cumulative 35 basis points of Fed rate hikes by December.
