Meta and EssilorLuxottica are facing a lawsuit from Solos Technology, which accuses the two companies of infringing upon its smart glasses-related technology patents.

Solos Technology filed the complaint on Friday, alleging the defendants infringed multiple patents held by the company concerning smart glasses, covering functionalities such as multimodal sensing, audio processing, intelligent assistance, and the integrated system architecture supporting real-time user interaction.

The company claims that Meta's employees gained access to the relevant technology by reviewing its technical documentation and hiring personnel familiar with the technology; whereas relevant staff from EssilorLuxottica personally tested Solos Technology's technology over several years through various industry exhibitions.

Solos Technology stated that the aforementioned patents were successfully filed years before the defendants initiated their smart glasses research and development work.

The company, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, is seeking damages potentially amounting to billions of dollars and has requested the court to issue an injunction prohibiting the defendants from continuing to infringe its patents in the future. Additionally, Solos Technology has also named Oakley, a subsidiary of EssilorLuxottica, as a co-defendant in the lawsuit.

Meta, EssilorLuxottica, and Oakley did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Previously, Meta and EssilorLuxottica collaborated to launch several smart glasses products, including the popular Ray-Ban smart glasses featuring artificial intelligence technology. Meta revealed last year that sales for this series had surpassed two million units; recently, due to difficulties meeting demand in the US market, the launch plan for its latest product in Europe has been forced to delay.

Solos Technology's complaint primarily targets the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1 smart glasses model launched in 2023, while also noting that subsequent iterative versions are all developed based on this initial model and continue to utilize the patented technology in question.
