ByteDance Sells Moonton Games for Over $6 Billion in Strategic Shift

ByteDance has finalized the sale of Shanghai Moonton Technology Co., Ltd. (Moonton Games). Moonton CEO Zhang Yunfan announced to employees via an internal letter that ByteDance has signed an agreement to sell its entire stake in Moonton Games to Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group (Savvy) for a price exceeding $6 billion. The final sale price represents a premium of approximately 50%.

An analyst stated that this transaction clarifies ByteDance's strategic pivot. The funds recovered from the sale of Moonton Games are expected to provide ByteDance with substantial resources for investments in computing infrastructure, large model training, and the competition for top-tier talent.

Public information indicates the acquisition price surpasses $6 billion (over 41.3 billion Chinese Yuan). Following the acquisition, Moonton's management structure will remain unchanged, with Zhang Yunfan continuing as CEO. Additionally, based on historical contributions and future performance, Moonton will offer employees multiple incentive plans and new attractive compensation schemes.

A gaming industry analyst views this acquisition as a win-win transaction. For seller ByteDance, it represents a high-expectation sale of a profitable business that has become less aligned with its overall strategy. In 2021, media reports indicated ByteDance acquired Moonton Games for approximately $4 billion, during a period of intensive expansion in its gaming business. From 2020 to 2021, ByteDance made around 22 investments in the gaming sector involving 19 companies, with a total investment of roughly 30 billion Chinese Yuan. The final sale price signifies a 50% premium on the original acquisition cost.

Reports as early as 2023 suggested ByteDance was seeking to sell Moonton Games for no less than $5 billion, having appointed Goldman Sachs as a financial advisor. By late 2025, rumors of a sale to Savvy for at least $5 billion re-emerged.

A corporate strategy expert explained that the high-premium sale本质上 reflects a precise match between a 'scarce asset' and 'strategic demand.' From an asset value perspective, Moonton Games has a deep presence in the Southeast Asian market with a mature distribution network and esports ecosystem. For Savvy, which is eager to expand into the global gaming market, Moonton offers a ready-made entry ticket into the Asian market. The premium paid essentially covers the 'time cost.' Furthermore, the valuation logic for global gaming assets is shifting, with substantial Middle Eastern capital inflows raising the pricing benchmark for high-quality international assets. Moonton's stable profitability provides fundamental support for the premium, with multiple factors converging to facilitate this deal.

Regarding Moonton's own development, although its hit game "Mobile Legends: Bang Bang" holds a significant position in Southeast Asia, intensified industry competition has led to slowing performance growth in recent years. Financial data shows Moonton's gross profit margin plummeted from 29.22% to 18.14% in the first quarter of 2025.

Notably, in October 2025, reports indicated ByteDance plans to launch a new game distribution platform, GameTop, overseas. This platform will allow users to create and showcase their own games, while also providing a social space for sharing strategies and experiences. Several industry insiders suggest this win-win deal also marks a significant turning point for the strategic contraction of ByteDance's gaming business. Future efforts may shift towards lighter, platform-based development.

Another expert further added that user-generated content (UGC) aligns well with Douyin's content DNA, potentially creating a closed loop from short video discovery to game conversion and secondary content dissemination. Simultaneously, gaming services could act as a value-added service within the Douyin ecosystem, enhancing user engagement time and commercial efficiency through mini-games and live interactive games.

According to other reports, following the sale of Moonton, ByteDance is also considering a full spin-off of its gaming business, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary similar to Dongchedi. If the gaming business is fully spun off, it may operate more independently, though ByteDance could maintain industry involvement through investments or partnerships. In response to inquiries about further contraction or a full spin-off of the gaming business post-Moonton sale, a ByteDance representative declined to comment.

Signals of a significant contraction in ByteDance's gaming business have been apparent since 2022. By November 2023, ByteDance implemented large-scale adjustments to its game publishing and development unit, Nuverse. Previously, an angel investor and senior AI expert suggested the root of ByteDance's challenges in the gaming sector lies in a fundamental conflict between its agile, fast-paced organizational culture and the long development cycles required for mid-core and hardcore games.

The ultimate sale of Moonton Games confirms ByteDance's strategic refocus. ByteDance is likely to intensify its focus on AI, reducing its presence in traditional, saturated internet markets to fully bet on next-generation artificial intelligence technologies and adapt to the changing global tech competition landscape. The capital from the Moonton sale is expected to provide ample ammunition for ByteDance in the areas of computing infrastructure, large model training, and the competition for high-end talent.

During ByteDance's first all-hands meeting of 2026, CEO Liang Rubo defined the annual strategic keyword as "Scaling New Heights." He indicated that the immediate "peak" to conquer is the AI assistant "Doubao/Doula." The company also plans to increase talent density, enhance incentives, and ensure its compensation and benefits lead top-tier levels across global markets.

A financial researcher projected that ByteDance's future AI development will likely concentrate on three key areas: first, strengthening its foundational Seed large model and entry-level applications like Doubao to solidify its general AI capabilities; second, deeply integrating AI with Douyin, CapCut, e-commerce, and enterprise services to enable ecosystem-wide empowerment; and third, investing in AI-generated content, AI agents, and multimodal technologies to achieve commercialization. The overall strategy centers on "self-developed large models + full-scenario implementation + commercial closed-loop," concentrating resources to seize the window of opportunity in artificial general intelligence.
