Tibet Develops Smart Recognition for Highland Barley Growth During Key Development Stages

In late November, the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau, in collaboration with the regional agriculture department and high-tech enterprises, achieved a breakthrough in intelligent recognition of highland barley growth during critical development stages. The project, named "Spike Intelligence" chip research, integrates meteorological services with artificial intelligence to enhance agricultural weather observation for highland barley, boosting efficiency in plateau farming.

The initiative builds on the establishment of high-standard farmland smart weather observation stations and automated barley growth monitoring stations in Lhünzhub County and Dagzê District of Lhasa in July this year. These stations, equipped with the "Spike Intelligence" chip, automatically capture crop growth images and multiple meteorological factors. Using target detection algorithms, they achieve over 90% accuracy in identifying barley spike numbers, as confirmed by nearly two months of comparative trials.

Moving forward, the Tibet Meteorological Bureau plans to integrate high-standard farmland observation networks into the region’s rural revitalization policy framework (Category A). The goal is to refine the meteorological observation system and establish a smart agricultural weather service demonstration base combining research, production, and application. By 2030, 80 smart weather observation stations will be deployed across major barley and wheat production areas in the region.

Additionally, the bureau partnered with Qinghai Meteorological Bureau this year to conduct four rounds of winter barley introduction trials, exploring its adaptability, overwintering capacity, and yield potential in high-altitude cold regions.
