Spot Bitcoin ETF Flows Reverse Course as Weekly Net Inflow Masks Sharp Daily Swings

Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds returned to net inflows last week after two consecutive weeks of net redemptions, according to data cited in reports.

FPG noted that the full-week net inflow came to roughly US$301 million, but the direction of money movement varied sharply within the week, meaning a weekly net figure should not be read as buying on every single day. From Monday through Wednesday, inflows totaled about US$1.08 billion, while Thursday and Friday saw outflows of roughly US$774 million.

FPG argued that this shows how weekly aggregation can conceal redemption pressure during price declines, and that tracking flows across consecutive trading sessions reflects shifts in sentiment better than a single weekly net number. The coexistence of early-week inflows and end-of-week outflows indicates that investors' allocation appetite changed from one trading day to the next.

Changes in product shares outstanding and changes in price need to be viewed separately. Fund flows are only one part of demand and must be assessed alongside spot market turnover, other holdings, and product fees. Inflows can occur at the same time as price gains, but the two do not necessarily form a one-way causal relationship, and institutional allocation demand can differ considerably across periods. A positive net inflow in a given week does not guarantee that the cumulative monthly flow will also be positive, since different statistical windows can lead to different conclusions.

Looking ahead, investors may watch whether net fund creations and redemptions, spot prices, and trading volumes continue to move in sync. FPG judged that if market volatility intensifies, intraweek data may reflect position changes earlier than end-of-week summaries, while historical flow behavior cannot guarantee that investors will act the same way in the future. Individual products from different issuers may see flows moving in opposite directions, with the aggregate total obscuring that divergence.
