Shunchang Enterprise Breaks Import Monopoly on High-End Fluorinated Coolants

The rapid advancement of the AI industry has led to an explosion in computing power demand, with chip power consumption soaring from hundreds of watts to over a thousand watts, rendering traditional air-cooling methods increasingly inadequate. High-performance fluorinated coolants, capable of efficiently absorbing chip heat, are presenting new development opportunities for the high-end fluorinated new materials sector.

In the Shunchang Jinshan New Materials Industrial Park, Fujian Keneng New Materials Co., Ltd. is targeting the cutting-edge field of novel, environmentally friendly, high-end fluorinated coolants. The company is tackling the "bottleneck" technology long dependent on imports, driving the localization of high-end coolants through independent innovation and contributing to the development of new quality productive forces with robust new materials.

Recently, a visit was made to Fujian Keneng New Materials Co., Ltd., a company whose development theme is "Independent Innovation Forges Core Materials, Localizing High-End Coolants, Empowering New Quality Productive Forces." In the company's central control room, technicians methodically ensure the smooth operation of the production line.

"The first phase of the company's project involves a total investment of 5 billion yuan, with trial production approval obtained last December and commercial operation commencing this March," said Wu Ziliang, the company's General Manager. The first phase produces products like hexafluoropropylene oligomers and perfluorohexanone. The second phase, currently in preparation, will add an annual production capacity of 8,000 tons of high-end products such as electronic fluorinated coolants for applications in computing centers and electronics manufacturing.

Wu Ziliang explained that fluorinated coolants have two inherent advantages over air. Firstly, they have a higher heat capacity, meaning the same volume can absorb more heat. Secondly, they possess superior thermal conductivity, allowing heat to dissipate faster through the liquid. As a liquid medium, fluorinated coolants can therefore receive and remove chip heat more efficiently than air. "While fluorinated coolants bring improved heat dissipation efficiency and temperature control uniformity to hardware, they also enhance operational stability and extend service life," he added.

Inside the central control room, technicians monitor instrument screens to adjust reaction parameters as the automated production line runs smoothly. The company has invested heavily in automating, making intelligent, and digitizing its production line machinery and equipment, requiring only two personnel for external patrol inspections in the workshop.

"Traditional production lines use enamel reaction kettles with large liquid-holding capacities. Now, we employ more advanced reaction technology that is safer and more environmentally friendly," Wu Ziliang noted. The company utilizes internationally advanced continuous microchannel reaction technology from Corning Incorporated (USA), achieving fully automated, enclosed, and inherently safe production processes. The product's key performance indicators—such as insulation properties, thermal conductivity efficiency, chemical stability, and environmental friendliness with low Global Warming Potential (GWP)—benchmark and meet top international standards.

From the initial project planning and construction stage, the company has prioritized safety and environmental protection, adhering to high standards in design, construction, and operation. A significant portion of the investment is allocated to environmental protection, employing clean production processes to reduce carbon emissions at the source, control pollution during production, and manage end-of-pipe treatment. The goal is to build a modern chemical enterprise that is inherently safe, environmentally friendly, and innovation-driven, pursuing a path of sustainable, high-quality development.

"The fine chemicals industry is characterized by high technology intensity, stringent industry requirements, and high added value. Only by continuously launching higher-performance products better suited to new quality productive forces can we adapt to current development trends," Wu Ziliang stated. Regarding product portfolio, the company focuses on three core products: electronic fluorinated coolants specifically designed for AI computing centers, large data center liquid cooling systems, and various semiconductor equipment, leveraging advantages like strong insulation, non-corrosiveness, and high-temperature resistance to provide a robust thermal safety barrier for massive computing equipment; perfluorohexanone-based environmentally friendly fire suppressants, known for high efficiency and being green and pollution-free, widely used in data centers and energy storage power stations; and hexafluoropropylene oligomers and high-end fluorinated fine intermediates, applied across multiple upstream and downstream industries including high-end fluorinated materials, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

"Only by mastering core technologies ourselves can we truly grasp the initiative in competition and development," Wu Ziliang emphasized. On technological breakthroughs, the company insists on independent control of core technologies, holding multiple proprietary invention patents and having overcome a series of key technical challenges in the synthesis, purification, and stabilization of high-end fluorinated coolants.

Robust product strength and technical prowess have also garnered the company attention from domestic and international markets. Shortly after commencing production, five Japanese and Korean enterprises made special visits for inspection and exchange. "Our jointly developed chip cleaning and etching product with a domestic high-end research institution, codenamed '347', has been completed and will be used in the next-generation products of a leading global chip manufacturer," Wu Ziliang said with confidence.

Looking ahead, Wu Ziliang is optimistic. The enterprise will continue to take innovation as its core driving force and product quality as its foundation, increasing R&D investment, deepening its expertise in the high-end fluorinated materials field, and continuously launching high-performance new materials made in China. Moving forward, the company will also persistently extend its industrial chain, address shortcomings, and strengthen its advantages within the chain, contributing to Shunchang's goal of building a new materials industry hub in northern Fujian.
