According to data from Canalys (now part of Omdia) released on September 15, India's PC market (excluding tablets) grew 6% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2025, with shipments reaching 3.6 million units. Laptops became the primary growth driver due to increasing enterprise demand and preference for AI-enabled devices, with shipments rising 8% to 2.7 million units. Desktop shipments remained stable with a modest 1% increase to 861,000 units. However, the tablet market declined significantly by 27% year-over-year to 1.2 million units due to weakened government procurement demand.

Looking ahead to the full year, India's PC market is expected to grow 7% in 2025, reaching 15.1 million units, while the tablet market is projected to contract 13% to 5.2 million units. By 2026, PC market growth is expected to remain stable, benefiting from further device refresh demand and AI application adoption. Meanwhile, India's tablet market is anticipated to achieve 15% growth, supported by government-funded educational tender projects.

Ashweej Aithal, Senior Analyst at Canalys (now part of Omdia), stated: "Enterprise-driven demand remains the primary force behind India's notebook market growth in Q2 2025. AI laptop shipments nearly tripled year-over-year as enterprises accelerate AI infrastructure deployment to enhance productivity, drive automation, and prepare for the future. Device refreshes, including upgrades related to Windows 11 transition, also played a crucial role, driving enterprise PC shipments to grow over 11% in Q2 2025. Workstation demand was particularly strong, with this category growing as much as 41%, highlighting the demand for high-performance devices in engineering, design, and content creation."

Aithal added: "In the consumer market, growth was primarily driven by strengthened retail momentum and digital adoption. Vendors' aggressive marketing campaigns, especially during Republic Day and quarter-end promotions, combined with strong e-commerce channel pull, brought significant improvement to consumer laptop shipments, which grew 12% year-over-year."

In Q2 2025, India's tablet market declined 27% year-over-year, with shipments falling to 1.2 million units. The decline was primarily due to a 64% plunge in commercial shipments, as government and education sectors slowed orders after large-scale procurement last year. In contrast, the consumer market performed well with 35% year-over-year growth, benefiting from online promotions, affordable devices, and growing demand for entertainment and home learning. However, the market still faces saturation in entry-level products and competitive pressure from low-priced laptops and large-screen smartphones, with high-end and tablet education scenarios being the only bright spots.

Aithal stated: "In the second half of 2025, consumer laptop demand will remain strong, driven by competitive pricing, preference for mobile form factor products, and government support for locally manufactured devices. Desktops will remain relatively niche, with growth mainly concentrated in gaming and high-performance segments. This momentum is expected to continue into 2026, as PC penetration in smaller cities improves and users develop multi-device ownership trends, demand will further expand. In the commercial market, AI PC and Windows 11-related refresh cycles will dominate procurement, while large educational tenders such as Tamil Nadu's Elcot education project signal the return of large-scale deployments. These projects may continue into 2026, creating a compounding effect with strong enterprise refresh demand."

In 2025, the tablet market will remain under pressure, but educational projects in Uttar Pradesh are expected to launch at year-end, potentially driving shipment recovery, with local manufacturing policy preferences also providing some support. The 2026 tablet market performance will depend on the scale of educational demand and whether manufacturers can position tablets beyond "secondary use" applications.

India's PC market is entering a critical phase, with AI adoption, educational tenders, and local manufacturing determining its growth trajectory. Aithal concluded: "2025 is laying the foundation, while 2026 will test the sustainability of this growth and pave the way for a new growth cycle for the PC industry in this key market."
