LG Display: LCD TVs Would Need At Least 1.5 Million Backlight Zones to Match OLED Picture Quality

According to industry reports, LG Display CEO and President Jung Cheol-dong stated during an event in Seoul on September 26th that current LCD technology cannot surpass OLED display quality. The most advanced mass-produced LCD display technology currently available is RGB Mini LED, featuring tens of thousands of backlight zones. Jung believes that for LCD to achieve OLED-level performance, the number of zones would need to reach at least 1.5 million - roughly 100 times the current standard.

Regarding the company's core OLED business, Jung indicated that LG Display is considering the necessity of constructing G8.6 production lines. This represents a more conservative approach compared to Samsung Display, BOE, TCL CSOT, and Visionox, which have already announced plans or begun construction of similar facilities.

The executive also revealed that LG Display is developing other emerging display technologies, including Micro LED, with some variants reaching the stage where commercial mass production is being considered.
