Home Depot (HD.US) reported second-quarter fiscal 2027 results that beat expectations on both revenue and profit, with management highlighting that its strategy of capturing market share through strong execution in a challenging macro environment is gaining traction. For the quarter ended August 18, total sales reached $47.9 billion, up 5.7% year-over-year, while comparable sales grew 1.7%. The performance was driven by the combined strength of stores and digital platforms, with 13 of 16 merchandise departments posting positive growth and online sales recording double-digit growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. The Pro customer segment also delivered standout results during the period.

Management reaffirmed its full-year comparable sales guidance of 0% to 2% growth and expressed confidence in continued market share gains, noting that strategic investments are now entering a harvest phase. Despite historically low housing turnover and pressured demand for large-scale projects, consumer engagement in smaller repair and maintenance projects remains steady, and management indicated the market has not deteriorated further. The company's second-quarter outperformance, with 13 departments and the Pro business both growing, validates that the combination of interconnected retail and store-based fulfillment is delivering tangible results.

Management emphasized that market share gains are not dependent on an improving external environment but rather stem from sustained investments in store experience, supply chain acceleration such as nationwide Express Delivery, and the Pro ecosystem. These investments are translating into higher customer satisfaction and loyalty. On the cost front, management clarified that the $685 million tariff refund is a one-time market-level benefit, which has been fully deployed to offset unplanned cost pressures from fuel and commodities. Full-year gross margin is expected to remain stable, with no base drag anticipated for fiscal 2027.

Looking to the second half, management reiterated its comparable sales growth guidance of 0% to 2%, describing the range as prudent and appropriate. The organizational restructuring is designed to enhance agility and position the company for the next phase of innovation. Overall, management expressed strong confidence in the company's competitive position, asserting that it is building a moat combining physical stores, digital capabilities, and professional services that competitors will find difficult to replicate, enabling continued share expansion in an uncertain environment.

Where to Begin

The second quarter marked a period of broad-based strength across Home Depot's business lines. Comparable sales accelerated from May through July, with May up 1.2%, June up 1.5%, and July up 2.3% on a company-wide basis. US comparable sales rose 1.3% over the same period, with the same monthly progression. The company also opened three new stores during the quarter, bringing its total footprint to 2,364 locations.

Key Drivers Behind the Outperformance

The second-quarter results were driven by several factors that management believes are sustainable. The 13 merchandise departments that posted positive growth included storage, electrical, hardware, power tools, plumbing, indoor garden, kitchen, paint, bath, outdoor garden, building materials, flooring, and millwork. Comparable average ticket increased 2.8%, while comparable transactions declined 1%. Big-ticket transactions exceeding $1,000 grew 2.4% year-over-year. The Pro segment outperformed DIY customers during the quarter, with particular strength in professional-oriented categories such as portable power tools, decking, dimensional lumber, pipe and fittings, fasteners, hand tools, and concrete.

The Digital Engine and Delivery Speed

Digital sales grew 11% year-over-year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. This performance is attributed to ongoing investments in the interconnected platform, with faster delivery speeds resonating with customers and driving higher engagement. More than 65% of in-stock parcel deliveries now arrive same-day or next-day, and the company has launched Express Delivery nationwide, offering delivery of tens of thousands of products within three hours. For bulky items, delivery times have been reduced by approximately 45% over the past 18 months, with about 55% of in-stock bulky deliveries now arriving within two days.

Tariff Refund and Margin Dynamics

The company received a $730 million tariff refund under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) during the quarter, of which $685 million was recorded as a reduction to cost of sales. The remaining $45 million remains in inventory and will flow through the income statement as inventory turns over the year. The refund had a direct gross margin impact of approximately 145 basis points, partially offset by about 60 basis points of incremental cost pressures. Management expects the refund to be fully offset by unplanned cost pressures across the full year, resulting in no base effect entering fiscal 2027. The structural impact from the GMS and Mingledorff's acquisitions contributed approximately 60 basis points to the year-over-year gross margin comparison.

Looking Ahead: Guidance and Strategy

For fiscal 2026, management reaffirmed its guidance for comparable sales growth of flat to 2%, total sales growth of approximately 2.5% to 4.5%, and gross margin of approximately 33.1%. Operating margin is expected to be 12.4% to 12.6%, with adjusted operating margin of 12.8% to 13%. Capital expenditures are planned at approximately 2.5% of sales, and the company expects diluted EPS and adjusted diluted EPS to grow approximately flat to 4% compared to fiscal 2025. Management continues to express confidence in the company's ability to gain market share through its competitive advantages and sustained investments in the home improvement experience.

Pro Segment and Cross-Selling Opportunities

The Pro segment remains a key focus, with management highlighting the integration of SRS and GMS as a significant opportunity. The company's QuoteCenter platform has seen rapid adoption of SRS-enabled sales, with 90% of stores completing at least one sale through SRS over the past 12 months. The combination of Home Depot's and SRS's product catalogs is resonating with Pro customers, particularly in residential building, commercial, and remodeling verticals. Management noted that cross-selling between SRS and GMS is progressing well, with the full-year target of $400 million in cross-sell revenue on track. Investments in order management, delivery tracking, and B2B experiences are driving strong Pro engagement, including increased usage of project planning tools and AI-driven materials list generators.

Market Outlook and Interest Rates

Regarding interest rates, management noted that housing turnover remains at historic lows, having hovered around 3% for four years. Historically, such low levels have been followed by relatively quick rebounds, but no inflection point has yet emerged. Management does not believe recent rate increases have caused significant additional damage, as most of the impact has already been absorbed. When rates experience a step-down, housing activity is expected to show signs of life, but the company remains focused on controlling what it can in the current environment.

Strategic Positioning for Long-Term Growth

Management expressed confidence in the company's ability to continue capturing market share regardless of the macro environment. The investments in store experience, supply chain speed, and Pro ecosystem are creating a durable competitive advantage that management believes will be difficult for competitors to replicate. The company's focus on operational excellence, innovation, and customer service is driving higher employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and sales growth. As the company continues to execute on its strategy, management believes it is well-positioned to outperform the market and deliver long-term shareholder value.
