According to data from industry analyst Cui Dongshu, global auto sales totaled 56.11 million units during the January-July period of 2026, with new energy vehicles (NEVs) reaching 13.52 million units.

During this timeframe, the NEV market share climbed to 24.1%, with pure electric vehicles accounting for 16.8% and plug-in hybrids making up 7.3% of total vehicle sales. Hybrid vehicles also demonstrated strong performance, capturing an 8.1% share.

Overseas NEV markets are showing renewed momentum, driven primarily by a significant recovery in European new energy adoption. In July alone, NEV sales in markets outside China reached 780,000 units, representing a 29% year-on-year increase. Cumulative overseas NEV sales for the first seven months totaled 5.11 million units, growing 30% and returning to levels close to the two-year historical average.

Market Dynamics in Key Regions

In the United States, NEV sales reached 104,000 units in July 2026, marking a 37% decline from the same period last year. The January-July tally for US NEV sales stood at 710,000 units, down 29% annually. This contraction reflects the impact of discontinued government subsidies and higher tariffs affecting pricing.

Europe presents a contrasting picture, with NEV passenger car sales reaching 3.86 million units in 2025, adding 960,000 units compared to the prior year for a 33% growth rate. Preliminary statistics indicate European NEV passenger car sales hit 410,000 units in July, up 38% year-on-year, while the January-July 2026 figure reached 2.79 million units, reflecting a 34% annual increase.

Global NEV Penetration Trends

Global NEV penetration has shown consistent upward momentum. After reaching 13.1% in 2022, the rate climbed to 15.9% in 2023, 19.5% in 2024, 23.6% in 2025, and now stands at 24.1% for 2026. However, adoption varies dramatically across markets. Germany has achieved 32.6% penetration, Norway leads at 81%, and the UK stands at 35%. In stark contrast, the United States sits at only 7% and Japan at a mere 4%, underscoring the highly uneven global development of new energy vehicles.

China continues to dominate the global NEV landscape, holding a 62% share of worldwide NEV passenger car sales during January-July 2026, reaching 65.3% in July. This follows China's 68.3% share in 2025. In the plug-in hybrid segment, China's global share reached an extraordinary 76.4% in 2025, maintained at 71% during the January-July 2026 period, and rising to 74% in July, demonstrating exceptional market strength.

Chinese independent brands have made significant inroads in overseas markets, with their NEV passenger car share jumping to 28% in July 2026, a substantial leap from 15.8% in 2025. This progress is partly attributable to the contraction of the US NEV market, which has enhanced the relative position of Chinese exports.

Historical Sales Performance

The NEV landscape has transformed dramatically since 2020. Global NEV passenger car sales stood at 2.87 million units in 2020, surging 42% year-on-year. This momentum continued with 6.37 million units in 2021 (a 122% increase), 10.5 million in 2022 (65% growth), 14.12 million in 2023 (34% growth), and 17.88 million in 2024 (27% growth). The European and American markets experienced a slowdown during this period, moderating the overall growth trajectory.

Total global auto sales reached 91.77 million units in 2024 with NEV sales of 17.88 million. In 2025, global auto sales expanded to 96.89 million units, including 22.89 million NEVs. For January-July 2026, sales hit 56.11 million vehicles overall and 13.52 million NEVs, with the latter growing 15% year-on-year. July 2026 NEV sales reached 2.25 million units, up 24% and returning to a historically normal growth pace.

Manufacturer Competitive Landscape

BYD continues to lead the global NEV market with an expanding footprint. In the pure electric segment, BYD's share has steadily risen from 7% in 2021 to 17% in 2023, and has maintained 18% through 2024-2025. Tesla, conversely, has seen its share decline from approximately 23% in 2021 to a lower level of 13%. Geely Group has increased its pure electric share from 4% in 2019 to 9% in 2026.

In the plug-in hybrid segment, BYD's dominance is particularly pronounced. Its global share stood at 15% in 2021, rose to 36% in 2023, 39% in 2024, and has maintained 32% during January-July 2026, solidifying its leadership position. Geely-Volvo has captured 12.6% of the global plug-in hybrid market.

Among other manufacturers, German automakers have shown mixed results. Volkswagen's plug-in hybrid share spiked to 15% in 2021 before falling to a trough in 2024, then recovering to 6.7% in 2026. BMW followed a similar pattern, rebounding to 2.5% in 2026. German brands have generally shifted to lower-tier competitive positions in the global NEV arena.

Hybrid and Regional Market Structure

China emerged as a major hybrid market by 2022, though its global share temporarily declined with the rise of plug-in hybrids. By 2026, China's hybrid market share has recovered to 15.6% globally. The US hybrid market has also strengthened, accounting for 30% of worldwide sales thus far in 2026.

The traditional hybrid segment remains dominated by Japanese and Korean manufacturers, with Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai collectively holding 84% of the market in 2026. Most other companies maintain hybrid shares below 1%. Ford and Mazda have recently shown improved hybrid performance in the US market.

Regional dynamics highlight the shifting nature of NEV adoption. Europe surpassed China in 2020 and has maintained steady high-level growth through 2021-2026. China's market has shown temporary weakness in early 2026 but remains fundamentally strong. In South America, NEV penetration exceeds 80%, while Southeast Asia has reached 46%.

The global NEV market is entering a phase of divergent growth patterns, with China continuing to strengthen its new energy policies while the US reduces supportive measures. Europe's subsidy programs are gradually restarting, creating a complex and evolving international NEV landscape marked by significant regional disparities in adoption rates.
