Innovation Tour: How China’s Agricultural Sector Uses “Breeding Chips” to Power a New Harvest

Golden rice waves sway in the autumn wind, and fruits weigh heavy on the branches. Across the country, the harvest season is arriving one region after another, with lively celebrations kicking off everywhere. A special “Vital China Research Tour” recently made its way to Hubei Province, where the excitement of the harvest is backed by real agricultural strength — from seed industry innovation to green technologies — all of which are solidifying the industrial foundation for rural revitalization.

At Bajiao Village in Jingmen, Hubei, preparations are underway for a bustling harvest festival. In recent days, villagers and staff have been busy decorating the site. Once nicknamed “Little Hankou,” Bajiao Village thrived during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a hub where land routes connected with water transport, attracting merchants from far and wide. Today, Jingmen remains a key grain-producing area in Hubei. At the event venue, a variety of local specialty products are on display. According to local county records, the rice featured here was once tribute rice, prized for its exceptional taste. Nearby, the intangible cultural heritage pastry “Taishi Cake” — said to originate from Southern Song Dynasty imperial kitchens — involves more than a dozen preparation steps and over a thousand years of history. Visitors rarely leave without taking a box home. Meanwhile, a new generation of farmers is setting up smartphones to livestream and sell these rustic treasures to customers far beyond the region.

One striking exhibit is a rice panicle from the “Huamoxiang No. 3” black rice variety, bred by researchers. Although the panicle has yellowed, the grains are still soft when the husk is peeled; starch and anthocyanins are still flowing into the kernel, meaning it is not yet ready for harvest. This black rice requires no lengthy soaking and steams up deliciously. Behind its superior quality lies a hardcore technology — the biological breeding chip. Breeding chips come in solid and liquid forms, containing countless microscopic gene “probes” invisible to the naked eye. Researchers extract DNA from seeds or leaves, and by matching genes against the probes, they can predict in advance whether a variety tolerates high temperatures, resists disease, or delivers good nutrition. This chip technology dramatically reduces the trial-and-error phase in the field, significantly boosting breeding efficiency.

Hubei’s breeding efforts target three key pain points: heat resistance, waterlogging tolerance, and the combination of great taste with high nutrition. An official from the provincial agricultural technology extension station notes that Hubei, located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, frequently faces adverse conditions such as high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and pest outbreaks. By leveraging gene chip technology, the province accelerates the targeted screening and use of superior genes, drastically shortening the time needed for variety development and creating favorable conditions for rational, orderly, efficient, and precise promotion of new cultivars.

These ears of corn may look ordinary, but they are high-protein corn. Standard corn contains about 8% to 9% protein, while this new variety reaches 13.2%. Those few percentage points matter enormously: research shows that for every 1% increase in corn protein, China can reduce its imported soybean demand by nearly 8 million tons. Corn is a major feed ingredient, and in the past, yields were prioritized, leaving protein levels low — which forced heavy soybean imports to fill the protein gap. Now, with high-protein corn, farmers can cut back on imported soybeans, lowering costs while keeping food security firmly in their own hands. This variety is already being grown across most of China’s major cropping regions.

Beyond the fields, there is good news from the water as well. Hubei is famous for crayfish, a summer staple. But once temperatures drop, crayfish in most production areas burrow into the mud to hibernate, forcing enthusiasts to wait until next year. Now, through techniques like constant-temperature breeding and ecological regulation, researchers have achieved year-round crayfish availability. This innovation has also transformed the old pattern where farmers worked half the year and sat idle the other half. From experience-based breeding to precision breeding, technology is truly taking root in the farmland, replacing the outdated approach of relying on weather and guesswork — and the fruits of scientific innovation are now visibly scattered across the vast fields of the nation.
