China Energy Engineering Group Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. has recently been awarded the contract for Section II of the engineering procurement and construction (EPC) work for the Hongshagang 1,200-megawatt photovoltaic project in Minqin County, Wuwei City, which is part of the Gansu Tengger Desert Hexi New Energy Base.

Following the successful bid for Section I of the project in January, the Northwest Institute has now secured the entirety of the EPC work for this initiative, with the combined contract value amounting to approximately 2.618 billion yuan.

The project is situated in Hongshagang Town, Minqin County, Wuwei City. It represents a key planned development within the Gansu Tengger Desert Hexi New Energy Base, boasting a total installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

The project includes the construction of a supporting 330-kilovolt step-up and energy storage station, with an energy storage capacity of 420 megawatts/840 megawatt-hours. Sand control engineering will be implemented concurrently.

The overall project is being executed in two sections. Section I involves the planning and construction of a 556.8-megawatt photovoltaic array area along with the 330-kilovolt step-up and energy storage station. Section II encompasses the planning and construction of a 643.2-megawatt photovoltaic array area.

The 330-kilovolt Step-up and Energy Storage Station

As a pivotal new energy project within the large-scale desert wind and solar power base in the Hexi Corridor, the project is expected to generate approximately 2.12 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually upon commissioning.

This output will equate to saving about 260,000 tons of standard coal each year. The project will fully unlock the power transmission potential of the Tengger Desert new energy base, enhance the grid's peak-shaving capacity, and consistently supply green power to the inter-provincial energy corridor known as "Gansu Power Transmission to Zhejiang."

Concurrently, it will significantly optimize the power supply structure in the Hexi region, bolster the power supply guarantee capability of the Northwest China Grid, and accelerate the development and construction of Gansu's large-scale wind and solar power bases in desert, Gobi, and barren land areas.

Furthermore, it will drive the scaled development and high-quality integration of the local new energy industry in Gansu, achieving synergistic progress in both ecological conservation and economic growth.
