New York Currency Markets: Dollar Index Steady, Set for Strongest Weekly Performance in a Month

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed on Friday, putting it on course for its best weekly performance since the Federal Reserve signaled a hawkish stance in June.

The index showed minimal movement during the day, with a 0.4% gain for the week so far, as investors turned back to the US dollar as a traditional safe-haven asset amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

In its most significant move yet, the US will impose tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on goods from most major trading partners, marking the largest effort to rebuild the tariff wall that President Donald Trump previously had overturned by the Supreme Court.

US Treasuries pared their gains during the afternoon trading session in New York, as traders prepared for next week's bond auctions.

USD/JPY was little changed on the day, trading at 163.83, and posted a gain of 0.9% for the week.

The Japanese yen is heading for its largest weekly loss in over two months, with intervention warnings failing to deter investors from betting on further yen weakness.

As the yen dropped to a 40-year low, an increasing number of banks are advising traders to prepare for a more hawkish stance from the Bank of Japan.

EUR/USD fell 0.1% to 1.1369.

European Central Bank Governing Council member Gediminas Simkus stated that it remains more likely for the ECB to raise borrowing costs than to keep rates unchanged.

GBP/USD rose 0.1% to 1.3326.
