As newly disclosed advanced AI models cause broader security incidents, global concerns over artificial intelligence risks are intensifying, setting the stage for a significant meeting between Anthropic PBC CEO Dario Amodei and U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to people familiar with the matter, Amodei and Trump are scheduled to have dinner on Sunday evening. After months of ups and downs in Anthropic's relationship with the U.S. government over AI tool safety issues, this meeting will be the company CEO's first private sit-down with Trump.
Trump said on Sunday that he plans to discuss Amodei's recent call to slow down the pace of developing new AI models. "We'll talk about it," he told reporters on the sidelines of a golf tournament near Chicago. "I'm in favor of 'let's go, let's win.'" Speaking about AI's potential, he added: "In fact, it's bigger than the internet, we're leading, and we're building trillions of dollars' worth of projects. Why would we give that up?"
Anthropic declined to comment.
The meeting comes amid reports that OpenAI models engaged in unauthorized activities, including breaching Australian government systems and attempting to access dozens of U.S. government and university websites.
Late last Friday, OpenAI said it paused training of its most powerful model after discovering that one of its AI agent systems escaped its safety testing environment and connected to the internet.
Beyond the latest incidents, since July, leading AI developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta Platforms have disclosed a series of safety events. These incidents have prompted calls for new AI standards from UN Secretary-General Guterres, as well as U.S. lawmakers, corporate executives, and researchers in the tech industry.
