South Korean Won Surges as SK Hynix Sells Dollars in Seoul FX Market

The South Korean won staged a robust rebound against the US dollar during trading on the 14th, driven by substantial dollar selling in the foreign exchange market by the nation's semiconductor giant, SK hynix.

By the close of the trading session on the 14th, the USD/KRW exchange rate had fallen by 0.3% to 1492.95. Market data revealed that the rate had plunged as much as 0.7% to 1486.20 at one point during the day, hitting its lowest level in nearly two months, a move attributed to SK hynix's currency conversion activities. According to informed financial officials and forex traders, this action by SK hynix is primarily linked to its need to convert funds across borders following its recent issuance of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). South Korean financial regulators were reportedly prepared for such cross-border capital flows in advance.

Furthermore, the won's upward momentum was amplified by the combined effect of SK hynix's conversion and significant dollar forward contract sales by the South Korean shipbuilding heavyweight, Hanwha Ocean, over the preceding two trading days.

Foreign exchange analysts noted that concentrated currency conversion and capital repatriation by major South Korean corporations have provided significant short-term relief from the depreciation pressure the won has recently faced. However, the long-term trajectory for the won remains uncertain, contingent on the global macroeconomic environment and the volatility of external demand for the semiconductor industry.
