Eleven Chinese Manufacturers Power the New iPhone Duo Supply Chain

Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market has triggered a significant reshuffling of its supply chain, with Chinese manufacturers securing a dominant role. The newly unveiled iPhone Duo, featuring a 5.4-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal screen, starts at 15,999 yuan in China, with the top-tier 2TB model priced at 26,499 yuan. This launch marks the inaugural major product event under Apple's new CEO and has been described as the company's most substantial product transformation in nearly two decades.

At least 11 Chinese suppliers have secured positions across the iPhone Duo's production chain, spanning assembly, structural components, circuit boards, testing, and optical systems. Lingyi Itech (Guangdong) Company has emerged as a core supplier for hinge precision components, screen support plates, and ultra-thin vapor chambers, while Lens Technology Co., Ltd. provides the ultra-thin flexible glass. Foxconn Industrial Internet Co., Ltd. continues its long-standing role as the primary assembler, extending its relationship with Apple that dates back to the original iPhone in 2007.

Where the manufacturing strength lies

The most critical component orders have landed with established Chinese players. Lingyi Itech, founded by 61-year-old Zeng Fangqin, secured orders for hinge precision structures and other core mechanical parts. Zeng, who built her company from a modest 80-employee workshop in 2006, has seen her firm's stock rise on the news of the Apple partnership. Her company had invested early in foldable screen technology, developing hinge rotation precision to 0.002 millimeters and achieving a per-device supply value of $80 to $100.

Lens Technology, led by self-made billionaire Zhou Qunfei, controls approximately 70% of the ultra-thin flexible glass supply for the foldable display. Zhou's journey from a factory worker at age 15 to one of China's wealthiest entrepreneurs has been defined by pivotal technology bets. Her company began mass production of foldable display glass in mid-2026, with per-unit processing value substantially higher than traditional components.

Other Chinese suppliers have also carved out critical roles. Yi'an Technology and Jingyan Technology contribute metal injection molding components, while Dongshan Precision and Pengding Holdings provide advanced flexible circuit boards. Rongqi Technology handles production line testing and Crystal Optech supplies optical components. Combined with Changying Precision's structural component expertise, the total market value of Apple's Chinese suppliers exceeds 4.3 trillion yuan.

A new era of shared development

While Chinese companies command the manufacturing landscape, high-barrier segments remain with international players. Samsung Display exclusively supplies both OLED screens, Corning developed the ultra-thin cover glass in partnership with Apple, and Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix provide memory chips. This distribution highlights the global specialization: China's manufacturing depth, Korea's panel and storage advantages, and America's chip design capabilities.

Apple's supply chain is now showing signs of deeper evolution under new leadership. Despite US manufacturing reshoring efforts and expansion in India and Vietnam, India's local component rate remains only 15% to 20%, with most critical parts still imported from China. Research analysts note that even with increased domestic chip investments and Southeast Asian assembly transfers, China's mature manufacturing clusters remain indispensable, particularly for next-generation hardware.

The transformation extends beyond contract manufacturing into collaborative development. Apple has partnered with Alibaba on AI models specifically tailored for the Chinese market, with Baidu handling AI search integration. This shift from simple order fulfillment to joint research and development marks a fundamental upgrade in the relationship between Chinese manufacturers and Apple. The iPhone Duo represents not an endpoint but the beginning of this new phase of industrial partnership.
