Pay 79,800 Yuan to Pass Retakes? Guangming Net Questions: Should Schools "Erase Failures" with Price Tags?

Paying 79,800 yuan to guarantee passing retakes—does this mean academic scores have become a tradable commodity, and educational fairness a privilege with a price tag? Recently, Xi’an Technology and Business College sparked controversy after reports revealed that students could "erase failing grades" and receive "priority treatment" by paying tens of thousands of yuan for a so-called "micro-study abroad" program.

One parent still recalls the shock of receiving a call from their child’s academic advisor. "Your child failed four courses and risks being held back," the advisor asserted with undeniable authority, only to pivot: "But joining the micro-study program can solve this." The advisor further hinted that payment would not only resolve the failing grades but also secure "special privileges" in awards, dormitory assignments, and more.

When questioned why they should pay nearly 80,000 yuan for a "study tour" that involved no actual travel or academic activities, the advisor bluntly admitted, "This is designed for students who failed—no overseas trip, no study activities." Even more perplexing, parents’ payment records showed the recipient was a mysterious tech company in Yili.

While private colleges have autonomy and may pursue reasonable profits, schools are not above the law. When failing grades become a tool for profit, and academic advisors turn into sales agents, how much of education’s original purpose remains?

The Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education has formed a task force to investigate. The public awaits answers to restore integrity in education and ensure schools return to their fundamental mission: teaching and nurturing students.
