Paris-based artificial intelligence company Mistral has announced the completion of a new funding round totaling €3 billion, securing a post-investment valuation of €21 billion. This significant capital injection was spearheaded by Samsung Electronics, marking a pivotal moment for Europe's ambitions in the AI sector.

Mistral's primary objective with this financing is to cultivate a robust European alternative to AI powerhouses like OpenAI and Anthropic. The investment round also saw participation from EQT, the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund, and existing shareholder PSG Equity. This latest round of funding follows a previous investment led by the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML.

CEO Arthur Mensch has outlined that the influx of capital will be directed towards expanding computational infrastructure, including the construction of proprietary data centers and the rental of computational resources. "The long-term strategy is to rely entirely on our own computing capacity. Over the next five years, we aim for approximately 100% growth in our self-owned compute scale," Mensch stated. He further added that the company will focus on training "larger and faster models."

Rather than following the closed-source path of its American rivals, the Paris-headquartered company takes a distinctive approach, licensing its AI models for businesses to customize and integrate. This strategy has already yielded results, with Mistral's AI technology now implemented in the manufacturing processes of ASML in the Netherlands. Mensch indicated that similar collaborations are planned with Samsung in industrial contexts.

Earlier this year, Mensch projected that Mistral's annual recurring revenue (ARR) would surpass $1 billion. He expressed confidence that the combination of this new funding and partnerships could push actual revenue beyond that target, though he declined to provide updated figures. "We are very confident that this funding will accelerate business growth in 2027 and beyond," said Mensch.

This development comes as Mistral positions itself to meet the growing demand for sovereign AI solutions in Europe. The company's focus on open-weight models distinguishes it from the proprietary systems of OpenAI and Anthropic, yet it faces stiff competition from Chinese AI developers. Mensch noted that new, highly competitive models are "coming soon" and pointed out that Chinese AI labs currently do not serve enterprise customers outside China.

While Mistral acknowledges that Chinese AI models can be deployed on its infrastructure in certain scenarios, it assures that there is no strong dependency, as all data remains on Mistral's side. Mensch cautioned that European businesses face significant uncertainty in relying on Chinese models long-term, citing questions about sustained development and potential export controls. "The uncertainty in this industry is extremely high right now. We must be the partner our customers trust. They want assurance that in a year's time, they'll have access to even better models. The only way to deliver on that promise is by continuously training our own models," he concluded.
