NIO disputes U.S. Defense Department’s addition to “Chinese military companies” list, cites no business impact

NIO Inc. (abbrev. NIO) has issued a voluntary announcement stating that the U-S Department of Defense (DoD) has added the company to its “Chinese military companies” (CMC) list.

The electric-vehicle maker asserts the designation is unfounded, emphasizing that it “is not a Chinese military company or a military-civil fusion contributor to the Chinese defense industrial base.” NIO underscored that the CMC list is not a sanctions list; therefore, U-S government procurement restrictions linked to the designation will not affect the company’s operations, nor does the list limit trading in NIO securities.

Management plans to engage proactively with the DoD to seek removal from the CMC list and will consider legal action if required to safeguard shareholder interests.

NIO operates under a weighted-voting-rights structure in which each Class A ordinary share carries one vote and each Class C ordinary share carries eight votes. Its American depositary shares, each representing one Class A share, trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “NIO.”

The announcement was authorized by Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bin Li on 9 June 2026. Other board members include Director Lihong Qin; Non-executive Directors Eddy Georges Skaf and Nicholas Paul Collins; and Independent Directors Hai Wu, Denny Ting Bun Lee, Yu Long and Yonggang Wen.
