Iran and Oman Negotiate to Restart Hormuz Strait Shipping, with the Latter Optimistic About Progress

Insiders report that negotiators from Iran and Oman are striving to reach an agreement to resume shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Both Iran and Oman have territories bordering the strait.

Sources indicate that officials from the two countries held talks in Tehran over the weekend and are continuing their consultations. If a deal is reached, it could pave the way for renewed peace negotiations between Iran and the United States. Due to the sensitive nature of the matter, these individuals requested anonymity.

Two of the informed sources stated that one proposal involves reopening the strait's so-called middle channel. Since the conflict erupted at the end of February, most vessels have avoided this route, opting instead for the northern channel near Iran's coast or the southern channel near Oman's Musandam exclave.

Insiders note that Omani negotiators are optimistic about announcing progress within the coming days, though they caution that a successful outcome is not guaranteed. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that "deep negotiations" are underway, but did not specify whether they involve the Strait of Hormuz.

The negotiations are primarily between Iran and Oman, with Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, as well as Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, also participating. According to informed sources, the middle channel is likely strewn with mines laid by Iran, and demining may be required before normal vessel traffic can resume.

Britain, France, and other European nations have indicated they could lead demining efforts, but only if security conditions permit. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is urging British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting to host a summit as soon as possible to protect maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
