Rescue operations following the mudslide disaster in Gyirong County, located within Shigatse City, Tibet, have been complicated by the discovery of a new landslide dam. According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, specialized reconnaissance and heavy-lift drones from the "Swift Response" unit have been deployed to continuously monitor the development of the Purepuqiang Zangbo barrier lake and conduct rolling assessments. These efforts are focused on providing full assistance and guidance to local authorities in their rescue and disaster relief operations.
On the evening of August 29th, forward-deployed monitoring drones detected a significant landslide occurring 2.8 kilometers downstream of the existing Purepuqiang Zangbo barrier lake. This new landslide has formed a fresh barrier, which is currently impounding water and creating a new barrier lake. In response, the Ministry of Emergency Management convened experts for immediate evaluation and analysis. As a precautionary measure, rescue and relief personnel stationed near the Gyirong port have been relocated to safe positions.
