Japan's Record-Setting Currency Intervention: A 15.4 Trillion Yen Defense of the Yen

Japan has spent a record-breaking 964 billion US dollars over the past month to shore up the yen, which had previously tumbled to its weakest point in four decades. This massive outlay underscores Tokyo's commitment to deploying increasingly forceful measures to support its currency's value.

According to data released by Japan's Ministry of Finance on Friday, the government intervened in the foreign exchange market to the tune of 15.4 trillion yen between July 30 and August 26, marking the largest single-month intervention on record. This latest effort was notably backed by the United States, sending a clear signal to speculators that betting against the yen is a risky proposition.

Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed in early August that the two nations had executed a coordinated currency intervention on July 31. Both officials stated they would not hesitate to step back into the market again if necessary. While the amount contributed by the US was not included in Japan's disclosed figures and is expected to be relatively modest, its symbolic weight far exceeds its actual financial scale.
