On the evening of September 17, XPeng's Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng discussed the pricing of the G9L, noting that he and President Wang Fengying had engaged in heated debates in the conference room.
Just hours earlier, the vehicle had been launched with a limited-time starting price of 231,800 yuan, 28,000 yuan lower than the pre-sale price announced in August. For a product stretching over 5.1 meters in length and sharing technology with the flagship SUV GX, this pricing places it squarely in the more competitive family SUV segment.
He Xiaopeng did not shy away from the business math behind the price. "With a car this large, XPeng naturally needs to pursue sufficient profit margins," he said, adding that he hopes the G9 and G9L together can achieve greater sales volumes globally.
XPeng has already set its next milestone: holding the global launch event for the G9L at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, with plans to roll it out across 64 countries and regions, with production arranged in both Guangzhou and Graz, Austria.
Meanwhile, He Xiaopeng revealed that beyond continuing its partnership with the Volkswagen Group, XPeng is also in talks with other automakers and non-automotive companies regarding technology and chip projects. While vehicle exports are supported by established sales and production networks, technology collaboration is just extending from the Volkswagen project to additional potential clients.
The Cost Equation of a Five-Seat Vehicle
The G9L carries over the G9 name, yet its product definition is closer to that of the GX.
According to XPeng's product matrix general manager Wu Anfei, the two vehicles were initiated concurrently over three years ago. The team once considered directly converting the GX's six-seat layout into a five-seat configuration, but ultimately designed a separate upper body for the G9L: to ensure ample space in the rear seats and trunk while preserving driving enjoyment for owners behind the wheel.
The shared components are mainly hidden beneath the body. By Wu Anfei's account, the G9L and GX share over 90% of their lower body manufacturing processes, with software, models, computing power, and some hardware also being reusable; the upper body, however, required redevelopment due to different styling and seating layouts. For XPeng, producing both a six-seater and a five-seater simultaneously means investment does not have to be counted twice. This is the foundation that allows the G9L to bring flagship technology into a lower price bracket.
The 231,800 yuan price point buys the pure electric two-wheel-drive Max version. Opting for four-wheel drive, both the pure electric and extended-range Ultra SE versions are offered at a limited-time price of 249,800 yuan, with higher trims extending up to 309,800 yuan.
The price ladder also reflects differences in technical configurations. The G9L's top tier packs three Turing chips, while the Max version carries the second-generation VLA Lite distilled edition. XPeng uses the entry-level price to open up the market, while reserving four-wheel drive and more advanced intelligent driving features for higher-priced variants.
Running both pure electric and extended-range powertrains in parallel marks another shift for the G9L compared to XPeng's earlier overseas models.
The extended-range version delivers a pure electric range of 435 kilometers under CLTC conditions and a combined range of 1,602 kilometers. He Xiaopeng mentioned during a group interview that while traveling overseas, he observed significant disparities in charging infrastructure across different locations.
Wu Anfei explained that left-hand drive, right-hand drive, and both powertrain options were all included in the initial planning stages of the vehicle's development. XPeng aims for a single model to enter more markets rather than simply shipping out domestically sold versions.
To that end, XPeng states the G9L underwent three years of development, completing 6.74 million kilometers of road testing across 26 countries and regions. Longer validation cycles and adaptations for different regional powertrains and configurations all add to development costs; shared platforms and larger projected sales volumes, however, help spread those investments. Whether the financials ultimately add up depends on the sales mix of each version after launch.
This is also why He Xiaopeng repeatedly emphasized profitability.
In the second quarter of this year, XPeng's vehicle gross margin stood at 12.1%, lower than the 14.3% recorded in the same period last year. Consequently, sales volume carries extra weight. When asked about sales targets, he framed the benchmark globally, expressing hope that the G9L would rank among the top three in its large five-seat SUV segment—a long-term expectation for that market niche.
Vehicles Go First, Technology Follows
XPeng's overseas business already has a base of users.
In the second quarter, overseas deliveries surpassed 20,000 vehicles for the first time, up 81% year-over-year; overseas operations contributed over 25% of total revenue in the first half. The existing business spans 68 countries and regions, with the 64 markets targeted for the G9L representing this new model's goals. Wu Anfei revealed that following the Paris launch, markets will see staggered rollouts and deliveries from October through December.
European production arrangements follow XPeng's collaboration with Magna.
Magna has been assembling XPeng models in Graz, Austria since 2025; under the latest plan, the G9L will become the fourth XPeng vehicle on this production line, following the G6, G9, and P7+. Production in Guangzhou, combined with local assembly in Graz, forms the supply arrangements for the G9L across different markets.
Once vehicles reach overseas shores, XPeng's most prized intelligent driving capabilities still need to be rolled out according to local timelines.
Wu Anfei noted that the G9L with the second-generation VLA is already undergoing testing in Europe, with subsequent rollouts subject to completing local regulatory and testing procedures. XPeng's plan, announced in March this year, calls for starting global deliveries of VLA 2.0 from 2027. This means that when the G9L launches overseas, vehicle sales and software capability rollouts will each advance on their own schedules.
Getting overseas consumers to accept a Chinese brand's flagship SUV is no easy feat either. He Xiaopeng told Wall Street News that building brand recognition mainly relies on "technological differentiation." He went on to say that XPeng's global push is "not about low pricing, not about stripped-down trims, but about technological differentiation."
In his view, intelligent driving, voice interaction, and charging infrastructure are the capabilities XPeng needs to progressively strengthen overseas. He laid out a timeline, planning to promote VLA globally by 2027 and expand overseas energy storage supercharging station construction from 2027 to 2028.
Beyond serving XPeng's own vehicles, self-developed technology is also starting to appear in other automakers' products.
The co-developed ID.UNYX 08 entered mass production this year, and the electronic and electrical architecture for Volkswagen's China market was also jointly developed by both parties. XPeng has further announced that Volkswagen is the first customer for its second-generation VLA, with the application market also in China. These collaborations bring XPeng's technology into another automaker's products, though the projects disclosed so far primarily serve Volkswagen's China operations.
The partnerships are also reflected in XPeng's financial reports. In the second quarter, "services and others" revenue reached 2.70 billion yuan, up 93.9% year-over-year.
He Xiaopeng also revealed that newly engaged collaboration prospects include both automakers and non-automotive companies, with discussions covering technology and chips, to be announced when the time is right. He also mentioned that new overseas partnership cases may be announced during the Paris Motor Show.
In October, the G9L will enter its global launch phase in Paris, and whether new collaborations will be announced simultaneously will become clearer. Thereafter, the new vehicle must complete deliveries across various regions, XPeng's proposed intelligent driving, voice, and charging capabilities must gradually integrate into local users' daily usage, and technology partnerships will continue advancing along with client projects.
Just how large the business of selling vehicles and selling technology can ultimately grow will become evident in delivery volumes and financial statements.
