Canada's Q3 GDP Grows 0.4% Annually, Bank of Nova Scotia Aligns with Central Bank Forecast

Derek Holt, Head of Capital Markets Economics at Bank of Nova Scotia, noted that while Canada's third-quarter annualized GDP growth reached only about 0.4%, it largely aligns with the Bank of Canada's latest projection of 0.5%. The analyst emphasized that despite August's 0.1% month-on-month contraction (with July's growth slightly revised upward to 0.3%), September's modest 0.2% expansion helped maintain marginal positive growth for the quarter.

Holt clarified that methodological differences exist between the Bank of Canada's quarterly forecasting model and market-tracking estimates, stating, "The two approaches prioritize distinct technical parameters such as statistical scope and sampling methodology, making it premature to conclude any official forecast deviation." Data revealed that resilient consumer spending (up 0.6% quarterly) and recovering residential investment (rising 1.1%) offset a 1.8% decline in goods exports, indicating the economy continues seeking momentum transition points.
