National Bureau of Statistics: July Industrial Production Shows Mixed Energy Trends

In July, energy production among enterprises above the designated size showed varied patterns: raw coal output decreased year-on-year, crude oil production shifted from a decline to an increase, natural gas output remained stable, and electricity generation was steady.

Coal, Crude Oil, and Natural Gas Production and Related Data

Raw coal output declined compared to the same period last year. In July, enterprises above the designated size produced 340 million tons of raw coal, a 10.1% drop year-on-year, with an average daily output of 11.07 million tons. For the first seven months of the year, raw coal production totaled 2.70 billion tons, a 2.9% decrease year-on-year.

Crude oil production turned from a decline to growth. In July, crude oil output from enterprises above the designated size reached 18.27 million tons, up 0.8% year-on-year, compared to a 0.5% decline in June. The average daily output was 589,000 tons. For the January-to-July period, crude oil production amounted to 127.69 million tons, a 0.9% increase year-on-year.

The decline in crude oil processing narrowed. In July, enterprises above the designated size processed 53.11 million tons of crude oil, a 15.8% decrease year-on-year, with the rate of decline narrowing by 1.9 percentage points from June. The average daily processing volume was 1.713 million tons. For the first seven months, total crude oil processing reached 396.96 million tons, down 6.5% year-on-year.

Natural gas production remained stable. In July, natural gas output from enterprises above the designated size was 21.4 billion cubic meters, a 0.9% decline year-on-year, with an average daily output of 690 million cubic meters. For the January-to-July period, natural gas production totaled 154.3 billion cubic meters, a 1.2% increase year-on-year.

Electricity Generation Conditions

Electricity generation by enterprises above the designated size was broadly stable. In July, power generation reached 943.9 billion kilowatt-hours, a slight 0.1% decrease year-on-year, with an average daily generation of 30.45 billion kilowatt-hours. For the first seven months, total power generation amounted to 5.6985 trillion kilowatt-hours, a 3.0% increase year-on-year.

By energy source, July saw thermal power from enterprises above the designated size shift from growth to decline, hydropower growth accelerated, nuclear and solar power growth slowed, and wind power turned from a decline to growth. Specifically, thermal power output fell 3.5% year-on-year, compared to a 0.5% increase in June. Hydropower output rose 6.7%, with growth accelerating by 1.9 percentage points. Nuclear power output grew 6.6%, with growth slowing by 1.9 percentage points. Wind power output increased 4.5%, compared to a 5.6% decline in June. Solar power output grew 5.6%, with growth slowing by 8.6 percentage points.

Notes

1. Indicator Definitions: Average daily product output is calculated by dividing the total output of enterprises above the designated size for the month by the number of calendar days in that month.

2. Statistical Scope: The production data in this report covers enterprises above the designated size, which includes all industrial enterprises with annual main business revenue of 20 million yuan or more. As the scope of enterprises above the designated size changes annually, to ensure comparability between current and previous years, the same-period data used to calculate year-on-year growth rates is consistent with the statistical scope of the current period, which may differ from the scope of previously published data.
