According to Woofun AI, stablecoin giant Tether is making a strategic pivot, partnering with Morgan Stanley (MS.US) to push for the redeployment of USDT onto the Bitcoin network.

This move was disclosed by Utexo CEO Viktor Ihnatiuk, who revealed that he has already met with senior Morgan Stanley (MS.US) executives in Washington to discuss cooperation pathways for promoting USDT across Europe and globally using new infrastructure.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino subsequently confirmed on social media that USDT is "returning" to its original birthplace from 2014, marking the stablecoin's attempt to reshape its native position within the Bitcoin ecosystem through technological upgrades after years of multi-chain dispersion.

How the technology has evolved

From a technological evolution perspective, USDT was initially issued based on the Omni Layer protocol, but later migrated on a large scale to Ethereum and Tron due to performance bottlenecks, and officially discontinued support for the Omni version in 2023.

The core driver of this return lies in the new infrastructure built by Utexo, a system designed to enable efficient stablecoin transfers through the Lightning Network and deeply reliant on the RGB protocol.

The RGB protocol can issue assets on Bitcoin without exposing transaction data off-chain, thereby balancing privacy and compliance.

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that Tether, together with Big Brain Holdings and Portal Ventures, led Utexo's $7.5 million seed round funding, with Franklin Templeton (BEN.US) also participating, demonstrating institutional capital's endorsement of this technological path.

This architecture not only addresses the performance limitations of the early Omni protocol but also achieves lightweight and private asset issuance through the RGB protocol, laying the underlying logic for the large-scale application of USDT on Bitcoin.

Market implementation moves forward

At the market implementation level, Morgan Stanley (MS.US)'s deployment pace resonates with Tether's technological advancement.

In April of this year, Morgan Stanley (MS.US) launched a Bitcoin spot ETF, and in May it also initiated cryptocurrency trading services on ETrade.

Although these products have not yet been fully opened to the general public, they have already sent a strong signal of traditional financial giants deepening their presence in the crypto space.

Meanwhile, Utexo has chosen to partner with UniSat wallet, which is specifically designed for Ordinals and tokens on Bitcoin, as the launch partner for its next-generation product.

The UniSat team claims that its weekly active user count has surpassed 1 million, and this massive user base provides potential scenario support for the actual circulation of USDT on the Bitcoin network.

Although the two parties have not yet announced a specific launch timetable, this collaboration is regarded as a key litmus test for validating market demand, aimed at testing the stability and user experience of the RGB protocol in real-world applications through high-frequency trading scenarios.

Ardoino's vision and regulatory hurdles

Paolo Ardoino proposed the RGB plan as early as August 2025, defining it as a key upgrade to enhance privacy and scalability, and emphasizing that Bitcoin needs a "truly native, lightweight, private, and highly scalable stablecoin."

Currently, the RGB protocol has been successfully deployed to Bitcoin's mainnet, aligning with Ardoino's strategic vision of not building an independent blockchain but instead leveraging existing network capabilities.

However, promotion in the European market still faces severe regulatory obstacles.

The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) requires that stablecoin reserves must be held in bank accounts, a rule that could limit USDT's compliant application in the region.

Given that Morgan Stanley (MS.US) has not yet announced a formal partnership with Utexo, the actual performance of the UniSat wallet product will become the first important case for testing genuine demand for USDT on Bitcoin, and its success or failure will directly affect Tether's subsequent global expansion strategy.
