During the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 17 to 28, a chance encounter took place at a pilot plot in Hustai National Park, roughly 100 kilometers west of the capital. There, Hélène Valade, the Group Environmental Development Director for LVMH, was met while inspecting the test site.

In a conversation, Valade highlighted LVMH's commitment to collaborating with government bodies and local communities to safeguard land and introduce regenerative agricultural practices in selected regions. She emphasized that in Mongolia, LVMH has forged crucial alliances with the UNCCD, the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), and its luxury brand Loro Piana.

Valade specifically underscored Loro Piana's advocacy for the "One Health" approach, which treats animal welfare, human health, and environmental vitality as an interconnected system. This partnership was formally signed in 2025, with this year marking the first phase of interim evaluations. According to Valade, the brand intends to present these preliminary findings at the next UNCCD gathering in 2026.

The "Resilient Threads" five-year initiative, officially launched by Loro Piana in May 2025, is focused on five ecologically fragile districts in Mongolia's Sükhbaatar Province. The program aims to bolster local cashmere cooperatives and nomadic herding communities while strengthening supply-chain resilience and protecting the Eastern Steppe, one of the world's last remaining intact grassland ecosystems. Following two years of preparation, the project was developed in collaboration with the UNCCD, the SFA, and the Odyssey Conservation Trust, with consultations involving the Mongolian government, local partners, and herder cooperatives from the outset.

This year, the initiative will deploy its first mobile "One Health" unit to deliver preventive care, vaccination drives, and health education to remote areas. Additionally, a biodiversity hub and seed bank will be established to preserve native plant species crucial for ecological balance and the well-being of both animals and people. The project also serves as a tangible implementation of the LVMH Group's broader "LIFE 360" environmental strategy.
