As of Oct 20, U.S. stock index futures performed as follows: Dow Jones futures were nearly flat, down 0.05%; S&P 500 futures fell 0.27%; and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.73%. The move pointed to a softer opening, with technology-linked contracts under the most pressure while the Dow held up better. That mix suggested continued caution around high-valuation growth shares even as broader market losses remained contained.

Notable Stock Movers: General Motors fell 7.7% after announcing a $20 billion buyback authorization and reporting better-than-expected quarterly results, a sign that the market is focusing more on guidance and margin pressure than on capital returns.

GE Aerospace fell more than 4%. The move followed the company’s latest quarterly release, which showed results and guidance above market expectations, yet the stock still pulled back as the earnings upside appeared largely priced in.

In semiconductors, NVIDIA slipped 0.9%, Apple fell 1.62%, Advanced Micro Devices dropped 2%, and Marvell Technology declined 2.74%.

Among China-related names, XPeng rose 3.37%, Li Auto gained 2.48%, Hesai Group jumped 9.5%, while Alibaba fell 1.58%.

Broader pre-bell trading was led by a small number of sharp movers, including Rapport Therapeutics up 19.86%, Xiao I Corp up 25.00%, and Dogness up 16.43%.

On the downside, China SXT Pharmaceuticals plunged 41.19%, WiMi Hologram Cloud fell 7.78%, and Freight Technologies dropped 6.12%.

The pattern was consistent with a selective tape: a handful of low-float or news-sensitive names moved sharply, while many large-cap technology and internet stocks traded modestly lower.

Key News

1. Amazon.com announced a more than $17 billion investment in Germany to expand cloud, AI, logistics, and media operations. The company said the package includes funding for cloud and data-center infrastructure, satellite internet initiatives, and logistics expansion. It also plans to create new jobs and open a second robotics and AI research lab, reinforcing its strategy to deepen European capabilities.

2. General Motors approved a $20 billion buyback while narrowing its outlook after a mixed quarterly report. The automaker said the authorization allows repurchases at any time and follows nearly $30 billion in buybacks over the past five years. Management also pointed to inflationary pressures and upcoming model launches as it works to support future earnings.

3. GE Aerospace raised its profit outlook after reporting stronger quarterly earnings and revenue. The company said solid demand for engine maintenance and spare parts helped offset higher fuel costs. Orders rose sharply, and management lifted both earnings and revenue guidance, underscoring continued strength in commercial engines and services.

4. 3M lifted its full-year profit forecast after cost controls and higher prices improved margins. The industrial group said resilience in its safety and industrial business helped offset uneven demand in some end markets. It also highlighted progress in products tied to data centers and semiconductors, which helped cushion softer consumer-facing areas.

5. Micron Technology agreed to fund Indium Corporation’s expansion in New York to restart domestic critical-minerals processing. The partnership includes a long-term supply agreement for high-purity minerals used in semiconductor manufacturing. The move is intended to reduce dependence on concentrated overseas refining capacity and support broader U.S. chip-supply-chain investment.

6. Halliburton reported sharply higher profit and revenue as drilling-and-evaluation demand improved. The oilfield services company said sales in that segment rose while overall revenue beat expectations. Management also said work to restore production and rebuild inventories should support multiyear demand growth for oilfield services.

7. Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance were reported to have ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards. The reported orders, if confirmed, would represent a very large commitment to professional GPU hardware. The report also said Nvidia may not be able to fulfill the full volume because demand exceeds its planned production ceiling.

8. GE Aerospace reported that quarterly orders surged while profit and revenue topped estimates. The company said commercial engine and services sales rose strongly, and defense-related sales also increased. Management used the results to justify a higher earnings and revenue outlook for the year.

9. Intel received a more positive assessment from a long-time skeptic after improvements in data-center and AI server chips. The analyst said the company has become more competitive under its current leadership and highlighted its manufacturing and custom-chip strengths. The view did not turn outright bullish, but it marked a notable shift after years of skepticism.

10. Japanese and Korean AI-linked semiconductor names were hit by renewed concerns over data-center spending and debt. Reuters and market reports said pressure on cloud and infrastructure-related names resurfaced as investors questioned the durability of AI capital spending. The pullback added to volatility across the chip chain and reinforced the cautious tone in pre-bell U.S. trading.
