A positive profit alert forecasting net profit growth of more than 400% was met with a 12.5% share price decline, with the good news and the stock moving in opposite directions. Is PANGAEA CONNECT (01473) simply missing expectations, or has the good news already been priced in?
According to Zhitong Finance APP, on October 12, PANGAEA CONNECT issued a positive profit alert, expecting revenue for the six months ended September 30, 2026 to grow by more than 80%, while unaudited consolidated profit attributable to shareholders is expected to be no less than HK$80 million, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 400%.
The earnings growth was mainly driven by the company's fulfillment and delivery of a large number of sales orders for 200Gb/s indium phosphide photodiode (PD) products. Benefiting from continued growth in global artificial intelligence-related demand, as of July 2026, the total value of the company's sales contracts on hand had further increased to approximately US$1.15 billion. It currently delivers about 15 million PD units per month, and this delivery volume is expected to increase further in the second half of the current financial year and in the next financial year.
The company's revenue has maintained growth for five consecutive financial years, and profit has maintained growth for three consecutive financial years. In the capital market, PANGAEA CONNECT's share price opened higher on the positive earnings news but then moved lower, closing down 12.5%.
In fact, looking over a longer period, the company began a bull market in July 2025, with the share price continuing to surge. On May 18, 2026, the share price nearly tripled in just ten trading days, after which it entered high-level consolidation. As of now, the cumulative gain in that period still exceeds 10 times.
With good news realized at a high level, how much further can the company go?
Strong earnings growth and structural upgrading lift profitability
According to Zhitong Finance APP, PANGAEA CONNECT supplies a comprehensive portfolio of optoelectronic and semiconductor components, including integrated circuits, lasers, photodiodes (PD) and related devices. These devices enable electro-optical and optoelectronic signal conversion within high-speed 800G/1.6T/3.2T modules used in AI data center applications and optical interconnects.
The company has identified opportunities in the AI industry and increased its bets on AI-adjacent areas, such as optical components for AI data infrastructure. The company's earnings growth has been strong. From fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2026, revenue grew by 15.48%, 53.77% and 4.77%, respectively, and is forecast to grow by 80% in the first half of fiscal 2027. Shareholder net profit began turning profitable in fiscal 2025, and is forecast to grow by more than 419.5% in the first half of fiscal 2027, with the profit amount exceeding the combined net profit of the previous two full financial years. The quality of this earnings inflection point is clear.
Data source: company financial reports and announcements. There are two main reasons for the substantial increase in forecast performance: first, a shift in product mix. The company has closely followed the AI trend and accelerated its upgrade toward the supply of optoelectronic and semiconductor components in recent years. 200Gb/s indium phosphide PD has stepped onto the stage amid the volume ramp of 800G/1.6T/3.2T optical modules for AI data centers (the speed specifications of a new generation of high-speed optical interconnects), and the share of high-value-added products has risen, driving the midpoint of gross margin upward. Second, economies of scale have emerged. Delivery volume has climbed to about 15 million units per month, expense ratios have optimized under operating leverage, and the growing contribution from the high-power industrial laser business has further improved overall profit margins.
PANGAEA CONNECT has also seen new growth variables emerge. The company recently signed an exclusive supply agreement for high-power laser light source systems with a domestic and globally leading manufacturer of printed circuit board (PCB) laser drilling equipment. The products are used in the production of high-layer-count high-density interconnect (HDI) and ultra-HDI boards, with deliveries having begun in October 2026. It is expected to deliver no fewer than 500 units and generate no less than US$55 million in revenue in the current fiscal year. This business is expected to create a new growth engine for the company.
As demand for bandwidth in hyperscale artificial intelligence systems grows, the industry is accelerating its transition to 1.6T and 3.2T interconnect hardware. As the AI infrastructure investment cycle advances, demand for high-speed and high-precision laser processing, including micro-drilling, fine-line circuit structuring and other precision processes, is expected to grow accordingly. In addition, the company's transimpedance amplifier (TIA, an amplifier chip used in the optical signal conversion process) is undergoing customer certification, while its CW laser (continuous wave laser) has entered the sample testing stage.
Order backlog exceeds US$1.1 billion, valuation trend still to be verified
As is well known, most Hong Kong stocks lack trading liquidity. "Storytelling" has become an important strategy for small- and mid-cap names with no or little trading volume to improve trading activity and market value management. PANGAEA CONNECT listed on the Hong Kong stock market in 2021, but declining performance pushed its valuation continuously lower. It was not until March 2025 that the company began a reversal with a positive profit alert on returning to profit. In July of the same year, it raised funds through a placement directed toward the AI sector. Driven by earnings growth and a new story, the market also voted actively, and after trading volume expanded, an upward valuation cycle began.
The company's orders experienced explosive growth in 2026, accelerating the upward movement in valuation. In January this year, the company announced sales orders totaling more than US$280 million, and its market value rose by more than 30% that month. In June, it announced total orders exceeding US$1 billion, but the market had anticipated this, with consecutive sharp gains in May and June totaling 232.7%. It entered high-level adjustment in July-August, then started moving north again in September. As of now, the company's share price has risen 2.64 times this year, and by more than 10 times since July 2025.
In addition, amid rotating speculation in AI concepts, the Hong Kong listing of Zhongji Innolight on the ChiNext board has kept the heat around the AI optical interconnect concept high. Chairman Feng Ruijiang disclosed increases in holdings twice, in July and September, and an institution entered at about HK$1.15 in late August. These "real money" signals, combined with the long-term lack of investment bank coverage, have boosted market confidence.
However, performance remains the biggest core variable for valuation. PANGAEA CONNECT is expected to maintain high growth in the second half of fiscal 2027, mainly supported by about US$1.15 billion in unfinished orders, guidance that monthly PD deliveries will "increase further," and a revenue commitment of no less than US$55 million for laser light source systems, which together form the foundation for the second half and the next fiscal year. In addition, if TIA certification is completed and CW lasers move from testing to mass production, the product portfolio is expected to shift from single-point PD volume growth to multiple growth drivers, entering a diversified-driven model.
It is worth noting that the company's profit margin is not high, but it is trending upward and has considerable room for improvement. From fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2026, gross margin and shareholder net margin were only 8.45%, 10.39% and 10.9%, and -2.1%, 1.16% and 1.86%, respectively, with the first half of fiscal 2027 forecast to exceed 4.22%. The company's cash flow is not abundant. In fiscal 2026, its debt-to-asset ratio reached 69.3%, while cash and cash equivalents were HK$97 million.
Overall, the divergence between the sharp increase in interim results and market value is in fact short-term selling pressure from profit-taking after earnings were realized at a high share price. The company's AI optical interconnect logic has moved from the storytelling stage into the "handing in homework" stage. With US$1.15 billion in orders on hand, equivalent to 4 times fiscal 2026 revenue and 5.7 times its current market value, and monthly orders still growing, whether the valuation can be re-rated further depends on the sustainability of delivery execution. On one side is the high certainty of rising orders, revenue and profitability; on the other is the reality of short-term high levels and high volatility. Whether the valuation can maintain its upward trend will be left for the full interim results and full-year fiscal 2027 results to verify one by one.
