Stock Track | SOXL Records 5.06% 24-Hour Plunge as AI Investment Doubts and China Chip Competition Trigger Broad Semiconductor Sell-Off

Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3x Shares (SOXL) registered a sharp 5.06% decline over the 24-hour period, as the leveraged ETF bore the brunt of an intensifying global semiconductor sell-off fueled by mounting skepticism over AI infrastructure spending and rising competitive threats from China.

The sell-off was triggered by a confluence of negative catalysts that rattled the chip sector. A report involving NVIDIA's potential $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI reignited concerns over the sustainability of the AI capital expenditure cycle, with investors questioning the circular financing logic underpinning massive AI infrastructure investments. Adding to the pressure, TSMC's plans to raise wafer fabrication prices by up to 10% and impose surcharges on high-performance computing orders intensified fears of chip inflation. Meanwhile, growing competitive pressure from China further dampened sentiment, as reports emerged of Chinese companies making significant progress in producing deep ultraviolet lithography machines, threatening the dominance of established players like ASML, and the explosive trading debut of Chinese memory chip maker CXMT stoked fears of increased competition.

The sell-off was not confined to the U.S. market, as South Korea's Kospi index plunged 11% in its worst session in four months, with heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix tumbling 13% and 14%, respectively. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 5%, with NVIDIA dropping approximately 5% and AMD declining about 8%, pushing chip stocks to their lowest levels in over two months. As a 3x leveraged bull ETF tracking the 30 largest U.S.-listed semiconductor companies, SOXL's decline was significantly amplified relative to the underlying index movement.
